So today I started to fix up my grandpas old birdcage. This chapter will be updated every day until I finish the project :)
It was rusted, the bottom grate was all cracked, and it was dirty, etc.
Day #1: Today I took out all the old bird toys, water dishes, perches, nesting boxes, etc. I tried to get the huge swing out but it was too rusted to turn the knob, so for now I left it there. I took out all the overgrown weeds (It has been outside for 3 years with no life so a bunch of dirt and stuff was there.) Then I tried taking the bottom grate out, as soon as I did that it broke into pieces. Next I started taking out the nesting boxes, I noticed something small moving so I looked and guess what I found? I FOUND A BABY PRAYING MANTIS! I named him Jimmy, and he just chilled on my hand for a while because I got distracted, after a while I let him onto the nearby tree branch. I then started sanding the old rusted parts until I once again saw Jimmy in the corner of my eye. I picked him up and used one hand to sand. A few seconds later the wind started and Jimmy flew off my hand, I spotted him and was about to pick him up but my mother had stepped outside and stepped on Jimmy. ;(
So while I was sad over that I continued sanding until I was satisfied. I took my birds outside with me for a little bit then put them back inside the house. Then I opened the nesting boxes, (these things were over 4 years old) they had mold in them so I'm gonna see if I can get it off tomorrow. Mom went to work and came back with spray paint to give the cage a fresh coat. By the time I was going to do it my dad started spraying our yard with the bug killer because we tend to get LOTS of spiders and ants. So I went inside and decided that I'm gonna paint it tomorrow while shopping for a new bottom grate.
R.I.P Jimmy, the best Praying Mantis ever, (I made him a little grave but mom threw it away ;(
Day #2:
(Sorry for the late update)
The second day (which was like 1 day ago) I got some white spray paint and put a new coat. It was fast dry paint so I waited for about 30 minutes and it was dry. After that I sanded the wood parts on the perches and swings so that they wouldn't have any sharp parts. I put those in and I took the toys out of my birds old cage.
I put them all up, then I got the food dishes and filled them with food. I have a separate thing for water so I filled that up too. Then I put the essentials like mineral bones in there. After all that was done I took my birds and let them in the new cage. I put one of the nesting boxes up too, and since the cage is so big my mom said that we might get two more parakeets :D
(If this doesn't make sense I apologize because I just started doing my schoolwork from this entire time off and my brain hurts :')
I'll see if I can get a picture of my birds from my phone onto my laptop!)
