Melanie's POV

After giving my and Kayla's names to the owner of the large house decorated with fancy stuff, we walked into the doorway where we were met with more sparkly New Year's decorations and tables with snacks and drinks.
"So, you wanna mingle or just stay here or hide and eat food?"
Kayla asked with a soft giggle.
We usually don't go to neighborhood parties but since this is the first New Year's Eve event since we both graduated college, we thought why not?
I looked at her as my eyes adjusted to the bright blueish lighting over us.
"I don't know, ya wanna get some drinks?"
I asked back nonchalantly, I didn't really care what we did at that moment.
In agreement, her and I walked through small crowds and reached the snack table and grabbed a couple small sandwiches and red punch.

I looked up from the table and saw a hooded man slouching against the dimly lit wall, his messy black hair covered most of his face but I could still tell he was not having a good time whatsoever.
For some reason, I found myself just stating at him.
I wasn't trying to be disrespectful or anything, my eyes were just drawn to him and I have no idea why.
Kayla began to speak but her voice sounded muffled to me, my mind was just fucked up and blurry, just looking in this guy's direction.
I contemplating talking to him, he seemed really lonely.
"Mel, is there a drug in your drink?"
Kayla asked breaking me from my trance, not sure if she was concerned or joking.
I regained my composure,
"No?"
I giggled softly as the man hesitated to return my gaze.
"Talk to him."
Kayla ordered, nudging my shoulder.
I looked at her and then looked back at the guy. It would probably be logical to talk to him, I mean he probably thinks I'm a creep.

I started to walk towards him, smiling softly to hopefully come off friendly.
The man looked straight at me so I saw his face.
I got taken back a bit, his face was unnaturally pale, he had dark rings around his eyes as though he hasn't slept in days, he had scars coming from the corners of his mouth that connected with his upper cheeks, they seemed to have some sort of makeup on them so they weren't clear; but they still made it look like he was smiling.
His appearance didn't scare or disgust me at all, he looked captivating in a way.
"Hi, uh.. sorry I was staring at ya. Probably seemed a bit creepy. "
I apologized, giggling nervously as my eyes met with the floor in embarrassment.
"I would be lying if I said it didn't."
He responded, chuckling halfheartedly with a low, raspy tone.
I was really scared that I hurt his feelings,
"I just thought I'd join you over here, ya look a little lonely."
I offered, standing next to him against the wall.
His hands shuffled in his grey hoodie pockets, I could tell he was more nervous than I was.
"Thanks."
He muttered, pressing himself closer to the wall.
I tried to strike up conversation,
"So do you usually go to partied like this?"
I decided to ask.
"No, my brother convinced me to come."
He replied in a dull tone, whipping his bangs out of his eyes.
I laughed a little at that statement,
"Oh yeah? Why?"
I asked hopefully not offending him again.
"I'm not really a social butterfly, if that's what you'd call it."
He explained, laying his shoulder back.
"Yeah, I understand. What's your name?"
I asked curiously.
"Jeff, yours?"

"My name's Melanie, my friend Kayla's here, where ever the hell she went."
I giggled, scanning the room for her.
He chuckled back and responded,
"Yeah.. my brother Liu is probably lost in the crowd too."
We both smiled softly at each other, which made me feel warm.
I'm not sure if his smile was genuine but nonetheless, it was beautiful to see.

We went on talking about our lives, well I did most if the talking. Jeff seemed very particular about what he told me which I completely understand, you cant openly trust a stranger. Despite his cold demeanor, he was pretty charming and funny surprisingly.
Before the party ended, we exchanged phone numbers and Kayla dragged me out of the conversation because she was tired which I found hilariously annoying.
I'm hoping that we meet each other again.

I came back home around 2am and went to bed, smiling like an idiot.
