Three months later

Melanie's POV.

I drove with Kayla to Jeff and Liu's house, it was a small farmhouse in a pretty isolated area away from most people
I kind of expected that though since Jeff seemed very reserved any way.
We walked onto the wood porch and knocked on the door as a dog started barking.
"I'm still surprised you wanted to come."
I giggled a bit, she insisted on coming even though I wanted to go alone.
"Well, you don't even know these guys completely. Just keeping you safe."
She smiled kindly, sometimes I think I can't protect myself because I am a year younger than her.
"Well thank you but you don't have to-"
Before I could finish my sentence, Liu dressed in a work uniform opened the door and smiled.
"Hey, are you must be Melanie and Kayla."
He greeted us, pushing the happy husky pup back away from the door.
"Hey Liu! Sorry did we come late?"
Kayla asked, smiling at the dog.
"Well, I am about to go to work in an hour but Jeff's home. I'll get him up, come in."
He kept the door opened as we walked into their warm house.
It was very small and cozy, I personally loved it.
"Oh, sorry. We didn't mean to come while he was asleep."
I responded as Liu made his way down the hallway, I felt weird about having to have Liu wake up his brother.
I thought he was still awake since I was talking to him before I left.
"Nah it's alright! I guess he dozed off before you came."
He chuckled a bit going into Jeff's room as I remembered him telling me that he was tired and didn't sleep that well last night.
I sighed a little, hoping he wasn't going to be annoyed.
"So he went back to sleep knowing that you were coming over?"
Kayla asked a bit jokingly but I knew that she was probably being judgemental.
"It's most likely an accident, he didn't sleep well."
I explained, petting the small husky that had it's front paws on my leg.
"Come on Jiffy."
Liu chuckled, making me snicker a little at the nickname he gave him.
'Don't call me that."
We heard Jeff groan tiredly as he came out of his room in jeans and a t-shirt.
We all made eye contact that made me shiver a bit, his face looked more scarred than before. It's a bit jarring when you first see it but it isn't scary or anything. I just wonder what happened, I saw pictures of him and Liu years ago so I knew that something happened.
Jeff looked downward as his hair fell in his face.
"Sorry we came and woke you up."
I apologized nervously.
"No you're fine Melanie, I fell asleep by mistake."
He responded quietly, petting the puppy when it ran up to him.
"You guys want anything?"
Liu asked, walking towards the kitchen.
"No thanks, I had something before I came."
I smiled back at him softly before Kayla began to speak.
"I'm kinda thirsty... Can I get some water?"
She asked sitting on their black linen sofa.
"Sure thing!"
Liu agreed, reaching into the fridge for a water bottle.
"Sit down, make yourselves comfy."
Jeff invited me with a soft smile, sitting on the other side of the sofa.
I smiled back and sat in the middle of him and Kayla.

"So how are you two doing?"
Liu asked kindly, handing Kayla a water bottle out of the fridge.
"Eh pretty good. Is there always traffic around here?"
She asked before sipping water.
"Did you guys take the highway?"
Jeff asked with a slight chuckle, I'm guessing there was more than one way to get to their house.
"Yeah, I guess we did!"
Kayla replied, chuckling back.
"Does it get lonely out here? You two are basically by yourselves."
I asked as Liu sat in a chair in front of the blinded window.
Liu shrugged,
"Not really, we've gotten used to it."
His brother nodded in agreement,
"We've been living out here for years, pretty peaceful. Liu, do we have any more Jim Bean?"
Liu's eyebrow raised as though he was about to protest, something about that question made his whole demeanor change.
"I thought you were cutting back.."
He muttered, Kayla and I looked at each other in concern.
Jeff's eyes narrowed and he leaned further into the sofa, as though he was hiding something.
"I am.."
He muttered, looking at me and then at Liu.
"Yeah, drinking a lot isn't good for your health, trust me I know."
I giggled trying to loosen the tension.
"Yeah, he keeps telling me that. I supposedly never listen."
Jeff replied nonchalantly.

"You don't, you're stubborn as hell!"
Liu exclaimed in a joking manner.
Kayla smiled a bit, I could tell she was a bit uncomfortable.
"Sorry girl, are we troubling you?"
Jeff asked with genuine worry.
"Nah, just hope we're not interrupting anything."
Kay giggled a bit, she and I weren't the ones for conflict. I'm sure they didn't mean anything.
"No, you're not. So did you get a new car Melanie?"
He replied, changing the subject.
"No, that one outside is Kayla's."
I nodded.
I got in a minor accident last month, so I have to wait until I get my car fixed.

A few hours after talking and bonding, Kayla and I were about to leave.
"Thanks so much for letting us interrupt your nap."
I laughed as I began to walk outside with Kayla.
"No problem! Hey..."
Jeff replied as I turned around and smiled.
"Thanks for coming.. it means a lot."
He smiled widely as I felt my cheeks grow warm and my body feel weak.
"Sure.. anytime."
I smiled back, offering a hug.
He hugged back as I felt the butterflies come again. He was so warm, I felt comfortable around him.
But for some reason, there was still something that felt off, something that nagged at me.
"Alright love birds break it up!"
Kayla called out jokingly from the driver's seat.
I released as we both giggled softly.
I looked up in his sparkling eyes and smiled once more before getting into the car and riding off.
Somehow even after talking for only three months, I felt myself becoming more attracted to him.
