The Main Four Chords

Just before you start strumming away songs you need to know this:

The silver bars are called frets. Where you hold them down changes the pitch of the sound.

So here we go...

Okay, so you have your basic G major chord.

You can have your middle finger on E3 (bottom string, 3rd fret), your index finger on A2 (fifth string, 2nd fret) and your ring finger on (high) E3 (Top string, 3rd fret).

You can get a better sound if you have your fingers not right on the fret but near to it, like just above it. Also you should arch your fingers so you can avoid muting the other strings when you play. Furthermore,  to get a more clean, nicer sound, you can press down hardee onto the strings when holding them down.

Now, your E Minor chord (Em).

You have your index finger on A2 (fifth string, 2nd fret) and your middle finger on D2 ( fourth string, 2nd fret).

Now, you have your D major chord.

You have your index finger on G2 (third string, 2nd fret), your middle finger on (high) E2 (top string, 2nd fret) and your ring finger on B3 (second string, 3rd fret).

Lastly you have your A major chord.

You have your index finger on D2, your middle finger on G2 and your ring finger on B2.

With these four chords you can play almost any/every popular pop song out there.
