Days turned into weeks and each one passed by with new things around every corner. I talked with Hermione, Harry and Ron a lot, they were really and truly good friends to me.
Draco was another story entirely. We became the most unlikely of friends. I took him to my favorite place down at the Black Lake and we went to the astronomy tower almost every week together. We ate together, did patrols together and we even studied together. Harry, Hermione and Ron did become suspicious of where I disappeared to but, if I do say so myself, I hid it pretty well. I wanted to tell them but I knew that they wouldn't accept that I was his close with one of their enemies. It could cause me to loose them as friends and that's not something that I wanted to risk.
"No, no, no. They were discovered in 1627 and became extinct in. . . ?" Draco asked, while we did our homework on the floor next to the crackling fire.
"Um 1632," I said.
He checked his notes and nodded. He was very intelligent. His school marks were very high.
I turned my head at the sound of the door opening and saw Professor Mcgonagall with a neutral expression on her face. I stood up and so did Draco.
"Good evening, students. I hope I am not disturbing you in any way but I have come to ask you to please prepare a short speech for after dinner this evening to explain that we shall be having a dance, when it is, what it will represent and that they can order the masks from you two," she pointed at us with a scroll that she held in her hand.
"We will have it done by dinner Professor," I said, smiling.
"Excellent. I will see you two at dinner," she said and walked out the door.I sat back down on the floor next to Draco but before we could pick up where we left off with our homework, I said, "So. . .you're doing the speech."
"Oh no way. Maybe you're forgetting the fact that everyone hates me? No one will want to even look at me," he said grimly.
"Then even more reason to do it," I said firmly.
He looked confused.
"Well why don't you show the school what a good head boy you are?" I suggested. "And don't worry, I'll help you write the speech."
"Okay I'll do it, but I'm not walking up on stage alone."
"You won't have to, I'll be right by your side the whole time," I said before we got started on the speech.
After dinner had ended and our plates had been cleared, Professor Mcgonagall signaled for us to join her on the stage. I got up and out of the corner of my eye I could see Draco nervously getting out of his seat. We walked up the stairs and I quickly gave his hand a brief, reassuring squeeze before we were next to Professor Mcgonagall. She gestured for us to go to the podium and speak.
"Go, don't worry you'll be great," I whispered quietly to him and then he started talking.
"Um in about th-th-three weeks, we will be having a dance for the seventh and eighth years and it will represent light conquering darkness. This represents our triumph over evil in the past year and our victory in the war-"
While Draco was taking a breath, to say the next sentence, someone shouted, "yeah and you would know all about that, wouldn't you Malfoy?"
My eyes went in search of that voice but I couldn't hear where it came from. My irritation levels were rising but when I looked at Draco it changed to sorrow.
"Silence," McGonagall scolded.
Draco looked down and I could see him taking a deep breath before he looked up to finish off the speech.
