N I A
Halloween fell on a Saturday this year.
Without the limitations of having to worry about getting up for work the next day, or even school for the little kids— I knew this would be a wild one.
But then of course, my version of it 'being a wild one' meant that the crowd of parents and kids at the Halloween Bash for work would be bigger, since there was no school or work.
I couldn't fathom what gave me the balls to walk through the streets of Harlem wearing a badly assembled Diana Ross costume—a big-haired curly wig, sparkly pink jumpsuit that looked similar enough to her Central Park live outfit, and a full face of bright makeup with pink hues.
I would definitely be attracting unwanted attention from forty-year-old bums who stood on the street corners all night, asking little kids for a piece of candy out of their trick-or-treat bags.
Only they would be asking me for a lot more than fucking candy.
Normally I didn't really care about my costume. Throwing on a two dollar paper mask and an old window curtain as a makeshift cape was good enough for me, and good enough for the kids, also not caring about the costume just as long as I gave them candy.
I was sure tonight they would probably confuse me as Beyoncé or something. Diana Ross was way, way before their time.
How old do you think you are, you crazy bitch?
But tonight was different. I was meeting Harry's friends for the first time, possibly the only time, and I wanted to make a good impression.
More so for Harry's sake. I wanted to show him how much his invitation meant to me, plus try everything in my power to not embarrass him.
I wouldn't be able to control what weird shit I was probably going to say but the least I could do was not look like a raggamuffin for the night.
Don't forget to lisp.
I also made it a point to make sure I didn't overdress or underdress, harassing Harry everyday of the week about his costume and whether or not his friends put any effort in.
I re-read the thread of our texts the night before, just in case I had somehow misunderstood him.
Harry: Young Harold may be making a reappearance soon.
Nia: Did anyone even ask for that?
Harry: But look how adorable he is. He even comes with free bread!
