kathleen "kath" emily gwilym

"life is tough. maybe that's why we shut people out and is are so distant; but maybe that is why life is tough because we don't let anyone in"

hi there. my name's kathleen emily gwilym. most people call me kath though. i'm 16, turning 17 in a month, and i live in the cut with my step mum clara and 4 younger half siblings. she works 2 jobs just to get food on the table for them, but could care less about me. my mum skipped town when i was about 2, and my dad remarried when i was 5. they had 4 kids together, and one day my dad disappeared, along with my best friend's - john b- dad. my whole life i've been hanging out with john b, because our dads were best friends. john b and i became friends with jj and pope, and later kie, who completes our friend group. the boys and i all live in the cut meaning we're pogues, while kie lives on figure 8, technically making her a kook, but she doesn't agree with that lifestyle. her and i have an unbreakable bond. we tell each other everything.
"hey john b, don't drop that beer!" jj calls up to john b, who's perched on the roof.
i'm sitting on the scaffolding, looking out at the ocean. a part of me feels like it's missing. my dad was the best. he gave everything he could to me, even though he didn't make a lot of money as a fisherman and dishwasher. I take a swig of my beer, wishing it was something stronger.
"uh hey guys, we gotta go!" kie yells.
"oh shit!" jj says, right as john b drops the beer.
the five of us run from Gary the security guy and i jump into the drivers seat of john b's van, with everyone else jumping in the back. gary chases us down the road a little bit, and jj tosses him a pbr, but he drops it. I speed up a bit, while everyone's laughing.
"man i love that guy!" john b laughs.
right now everything is okay, but what i don't know is what life has in store for me the next coming few weeks.
