Chapter Thirteen: Collapse Of The Heart

Prince Thomas wasn't surprised to find Mara be the first one awake.

For the past days, Mara had been the first one up and preparing for their day. He had found her with the map laid out, jars of liquid surrounded her, his only conclusion was they were her potions.

"Kai always wakes up before you", Mara said without moving her gaze up from the map.

Prince Thomas nodded his head as he looked over to his close friend who was snoring in his sleep. Kai had drained from not sleeping, always insisting to be the one on the look out.

"What are you doing?" Prince Thomas questioned as he walked over and took a seat beside her.

Mara gave him a quick glance before she pointed to the map, "I am trying to figure out a path that is more safe and will not lead us into any trouble. I do not wish to save you guys again from another princess."

Prince Thomas nodded his head as he looked over the map, trying to pretend like he knew exactly what she was doing.

Mara kept her gaze on her hands as she tried to avoid meeting the prince eye. Nervousness began to crawl through her skin as she felt her heart skip a beat, he was sitting to close for her liking.

She knew that their was a connection to the prince and something about him made her feel, different.

She had spent most of her life focused on her magic that she had never really put much attention to boys. When she had met the prince that night during the ball, Mara knew he wasn't like the others.

Throughout her years, she had met many king's who were cruel, greedy and selfish. But Prince Thomas was unique, kind and she could tell he wanted the best for his people.

Mara had ruined this for him. She had put his life at risk and now, it all depended on her to save him.

"You must hate me", Mara commented making the prince look at her.

"Why would I hate you?"

Mara shrugged her shoulders as she glanced over to him, "You are here because of me."

Prince Thomas simply gave her a soft laugh as he shook his head, "I don't hate you Mara. How could I possibly hate you when you stole my heart?".

Mara felt her cheeks flush red at the way he mentioned it. Almost as if it was a romantic thing, for her to have stolen the heart of the prince. But knowing that the prince didn't hate her, gave Mara a sense of hope.

Prince Thomas gave her a smile, "I don't quite understand why you did what you did Mara but if my heart was important for you then I would let you steal it all over again".

Prince Thomas scrunched up his nose as soon as he realized what he had said, "Sorry that sounded better in my head."

Mara laughed. "It is alright Tom, I feel honored for having permission to steal your heart once again."

Both the prince and the witch laughed together. The tension around them seemed to ease as they smiled at each other. There was a glint of happiness in Mara's eyes as she stared at the prince who had a soft smile resting on his lips.

Mara felt her heart beat faster as the prince stared at her with an emotion she couldn't decipher. There was almost a desperate expression in his eyes as they looked at her lips for a moment.

Prince Thomas glanced up to see Mara staring at him with a nervous look. He could feel his hands shaking with nervousness as he felt himself shift closer to her. The way Mara leaned her face towards him made him hold his breath, secretly pinching his thigh to make sure he wasn't dreaming.

Their lips were inches apart when suddenly, Mara's face twisted in pain. Her frantic eyes looked at the prince to see him mimicking her expression as blood trickled down his nose.

Mara felt a wave of darkness sweep through her veins as her eyes burned, she heard the faint yell of Kai calling her name before she passed out.
