Chapter Sixteen: The Elf King

Mara felt her heart drop to her stomach at the sound of that voice.

A voice she had hoped to never hear in her life ever again. There was a sickening feeling at the pit of her stomach as the elf king stepped out and gave her a smirk.

"Oh my dear Mara, we meet again in such weird circumstances, don't you think?" The elf king, Elio, took a step forward and made himself known.

The scar that ran down his left cheek made her gulp in fear as memories of their last encounter came to mind. Memories that reminded her of the evil she carried within her.

"Come on Mara, won't you come give your old friend a hug?" King Elio questioned as he opened his arms, motioning for him to come to him.

Mara simply ignored the way her heart skipped a beat at the evil glint in his eyes, "I wasn't aware that we were friends".

King Elio laughed making her flinch, something that Kai didn't miss. He had noticed the way her muscles tended up at the sound of his voice, the way she had subconsciously clenched her fist around his shirt. Almost like she was afraid that the elf king would get her.

"Ah what do we have here?", King Elio glanced between Kai and the prince, "It is always pleasant to meet Mara's experiments."

Kai and Prince Thomas shared a confused look making the elf king gasp dramatically.

"Oh Mara, you haven't told them?", King Elio let out a dry chuckle as he gave the witch a smirk before turning to the prince, "Young prince, you are so naive not to notice that Mara has lied to you all along."

Prince Thomas glanced over to Mara who was glaring at the elf king. He watched as her eyes teared up and she clenched her fist beside her.

"Come on Mara, tell them. Tell them how you are an evil son of a bitch who has been stealing hearts for years. That you've taken away the life of innocents for your magic"

Mara remained quiet as she stood there and glared at King Elio.

"Tell them Mara! Tell them how you'll take the prince and sacrifice him, just like you did to my son!" King Elio yelled making her flinch.

"Come on Mara, tell them how you ripped away my son and took his precious heart for your magic. Tell them how I begged you to give it back, how you told me you'd rather see me suffer then be in your own pain".

Mara simply stood there as a sob left her lips. She didn't want this, they weren't meant to find out, atleast not in this way. Yes, Mara had spent her years finding royal creatures and taken their heart to attempt a spell, but she had her plan to tell the prince.

Prince Thomas felt his heart beat rapidly as he looked at Mara. There was a tear rolling down her cheek as she turned her head to look at him.

"I'm sorry", Mara tried her best to ignore the way her legs felt like jello. She was on the brink of collapsing.

"Why?", Prince Thomas questioned, "Why did you do it Mara? Why did you steal my heart?".

The prince felt his anger grow as she remained quiet.

"Mara tell me! Why did you do it?", his voice cracked, making Mara frown.

"The spell it was to bring someone back from the dead", Mara wrapped an arm around her waist, "It was meant to work the first time but something went wrong and I...I started to look for more and every time I used those creatures hearts it would fail."

Prince Thomas felt his heart break at the way Mara was looking at him, "But then I found out that I had to try with a human heart and you were my last choice."

"Who were you trying to get back?"

Mara's lips trembled, "My...my mother."

The sound of King Elio's laugh made Mara clench her jaw. She turned to look at him, revenge and anger glared back at her as he gave her a smirk.

"So now that we all know what kind of creature she is," he took out a long blade and pointed it towards Mara, "I will be needing that heart. You can call this, an eye for an eye, if you will."

"I won't ever give it to you"

King Elio gave her an evil smile, "We'll see about that."
