Chapter Seventeen: What The Heart Wants
"Run, Mara"
Kai gave her a pointed look as he took out his sword and stood in a fighting stance. Mara gave him a wide eyed look as the prince stood beside Kai, a determined look in his eyes.
She had expected for them to be angry and push her away, after all they had finally known the truth as to why she had stolen the prince's heart.
"But-"
"Run Mara now. Go get that book", Kai turned his head to look at the elves before he returned his gaze to her, "Do the right thing."
Mara stood there for a moment as she moved her eyes to the prince who simply gave her a small nod. Ignoring the way her eyes drowned in tears, Mara gave them her back as she began to run down the forest, down the path where she hid the book.
There was a nagging thought in her mind that caused a headache. Mara's true intentions were revealed and now she had a decision to make.
Save the prince.
Or bring back her mother.
Mara had spent years planning this. She had spent sleepless nights finding the perfect spells, potions to bring back who she loved the most. But as Mara zigzagged her way through the forest, she came down to a realization.
Mara's mother wasn't the only one she loved.
Breathless, Mara came to a stop as a familiar tree came into her view. Acting quick, Mara murmured a spell, making the tree open revealing the hidden book. Knowing she didn't have much time Mara had to act quick before the elves murdered both Kai and the prince.
Coming down to her knees, Mara set up the book in front of her and began to mumble to the spell when a sob interrupted her. Waves of tears rolled down her cheeks as her heart clenched in pain.
She had to choose.
Mara didn't want to choose, not when she wanted both of them. She tried once again, to complete the spell but the pain within her didn't allow her.
"I can't...I can't do this, please there has to be another way" Mara pleaded as she grip the grass. A pained sob left her lips as she looked up to sky, "Why can't I have them both?".
Mara angrily yelled as she slammed her fist against the ground. She wanted her mother back, yes she did, but Mara didn't want to let the prince die.
Not when she cared too much for him.
Mara stayed on the ground, crying and pleading to the unknown for their to be another way. She wasn't aware of how long she was in that position until her knees began to ache and the pain in her chest settled down.
Ignoring the wet tears on her cheeks, Mara grabbed the book from the ground and opened it to the correct page. Grabbing the vile she carried around her neck, she placed it on top of the page and rested her hand above it.
Mara closed her eyes as another round of tears escaped her eyes. She ignored her pounding chest as she began to mumble the spell. Grunts of pain left her lips as she felt her magic within her swirl around, removing the darkness that had been affecting her.
Once the spell was complete, Mara took the vile and opened it. Taking a deep breath, she quickly without much thought drank it.
Swallowing the liquid, Mara let out a broken sob as she felt the magic settle within her as the spell had made its decision.
Mara had saved the prince.
