A young girl and young boy - maybe eight maximum - sat beside one another on a couch, the boy's head sat in his hands, and his slim body shook as desperate sobs left his mouth. The boy had short blonde hair, and was quite tall considering how small he looked. The girl had long, brunette hair that was tangled and thrown up in what looked like a fast pony tail.

From where they sat, I couldn't view the children's faces, but something about the scenery seemed familiar. They sat together on a fading yellow couch, in a room with worn down greying walls. The words the pair spoke were nearly incoherent but could still be registered.

" No, you don't get it! It's not your parents who caught the Flare! It's not your parents who are going crazy by the day! You don't get it! " the boy yelled into his hands each time the young girl told him everything would be fine.

" You can stay at my house, with me and my Mumma, please. She's immune, Newt. She won't go crazy on you, we can live together, and be best friends forever! Please, give it a chance? " the girl pleaded desperately, '' You can't go live on the street forever, and you know it. ''

The boy looked up, uncertainty in his posture. " Kels... it might work for a few weeks, but we can't be best friend's forever and you know that. Soon enough, we'll catch the Flare and die young and crazy. ''

The hope slowly faded from the girls eyes, " Maybe we could run away together, away from Denver? Go somewhere where the Flare doesn't exist? "  she pleaded, desperation written on her face.

" Kelsey, wake up. This is the real life, get your head out of the clouds. Wake up, Kels... '''

I snapped awake, my heart pumping loudly, I could hear it in my head. Thump, thump, thump...

It took me a few minutes to register what was going on. Newt stood infront of me, a hand on my shoulder, shaking me gently awake. " Kelsey, wake up.. '' he urged again, waving his other hand infront of my eyes as I slowly came to. " Wake up, shank. You've got a busy day today. ''

Waving him off, I sat up, groaning tiredly. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes with a yawn before throwing the covers off me in an exaggerated motion. " Happy? " I smirked, standing up. He eyed me in a suspiscious way, as though I'd said something confusing. He was bright and alert, as though he'd been awake for hours. He probably had been, though. Sleeping on the floor would keep anyone awake, really.

" I, uh... I noticed that when you arrived you had no clothes apart from what you're wearing, so unti then, you can borrow mine? " Newt offered, going for generosity. Without waiting for my answer, he walked to the large chest that lay against the far wall, under the make-shift window of two bamboo poles and nothing else. He lifted the lid and pulled out an array of clothing for me.

As wierd as this was, sharing clothes on our second day of knowing one another, I appreciated the offer and accepted a pair of white mid-thigh length shorts that looked like they'd never been worn before, and a blue shirt that came down to my elbows, that was smudged with black and brown, from months of use.

By the time I'd turned to thank him, only his head was peering around the door " Get changed, and I'll meet ya downstairs. We'll have breakfast and then a Gathering to sort out what to do with you. '' He flashed a smile and shut the door, his footsteps thumping down the hall until they were unable to be heard.

I nodded to myself and quickly changed into Newt's clothes, surprised at the near perfect fit. The shorts fit me perfectly, like a match made in heaven. The shirt was slightly too big, the shoulders stretched, probably because Newt had fairly broad shoulders. But I didn't complain. Sitting on the bed, I yanked on my combat boots and double knotted the laces before walking out the door, ready for the new day.
