It has been a week since Lucia has arrived in Lodi, Italy and four days since she sent her letter to Timothée. Everyday she found herself running to her grandparents mailbox to see if he had wrote back. Her brothers, Giovanni and Andrea have been teasing her about who she was waiting to receive mail from. Lucia wanted to keep Timothée a secret from them. She knew that once they found out that it was a boy she had to write to they would become defensive older brothers.
Lucia felt the sun's warm rays spread across her skin as a cool summer breeze blew through her long, brown hair. Being in Northern, Italy in the summertime truly was magical. It was unlike any other place. Days like this made Lucia grateful that her grandparents lived on the outskirts of city in the country side.
"Darling, can you help your Nonna pick some lemons for some homemade lemonade?", her Nonna smiles widely causing her wrinkles to crease even more around her eyes.
Lucia's Nonna was a small, petite woman only standing at 5 ft tall and maybe weighing 110 pounds, if that. She always wore floral short sleeve dresses with her gray hair tied back into a long braid down her back. Age was beginning to take a toll on Nonna, she couldn't move as swift as she used to and had to carry around a wooden cane.
"Of course, Nonna", Lucia beams walking over and kissing her on the cheek. "How many lemons do you need?"
"Could you please get five dear? I'm going to make two pitchers".
Lucia nods smiling down at her Nonna, she loved her so much. She always made the best comfort food. Lucia grabs a stool and heads towards the lemon tree. She carefully balances herself on the wobbling stool trying to reach her hand to grab lemons without falling. As Lucia is grabbing the last lemon she hears someone shout her name.
"Hey Luc! Don't fall!", Andrea shouts mocking his year younger sister.
"Oh bite me", Lucia barks back standing on her tippy toes. "Almost there", she whines to herself reaching for the lemon.
Suddenly, the stool begins to wobble again, and Lucia tries to regain her balance, but it is too late and she falls to the ground. Lucia lands hard on her butt and the basket of lemons land next to her spilling onto the ground. A loud laugh comes from Andrea causing Lucia to snap her head towards him to give him a dirty look. This causes Andrea to laugh even louder.
Lucia pouts her bottom lip out feeling her cheeks turn crimson red. Gosh, she was such a clutz sometimes.
"You are such a jerk", she groans pushing herself up from the ground, dusting grass off her jeans.
Giovanni comes rushing out of the shed where he was working with their Nonno to see what all the commotion was about.
"What happened?", he questions Lucia who is bright red from anger and embarrassment.
Lucia turns towards Andrea pointing her tanned finger, "That jerk scared me when I was on the stool reaching for lemons."
Giovanni sighs to himself running a hand over his sweaty, bronzed face. He was tall and muscular with dark wavy hair and hazel eyes. All the girls always drooled over Lucia's older brother. Some of her 'friends' would just hangout with Lucia sometimes just to get a glance at her brother. It drove her insane.
Andrea was the complete opposite of his eldest brother and Lucia. He looked nothing like the two who had similar features. Instead, he was rather short compared to his older brother who was 6'2", Andrea only stood at 5'8". His hair was dirty blonde and he had bright, blue eyes. Giovanni and Lucia often teased their middle brother saying he was the adopted one out of the family.
"No! I didn't scared you", Andrea shouts defensively crossing his arms across his chest. "I just said be careful not to fall."
"Yeah, but you said it sarcastically like you were wishing it upon me to fall", she argues back.
The two continue to bicker back and forth about who was right and who was wrong. Giovanni being the older brother decides it is time to break it up after letting them go after one another for a few minutes. He storms over to Lucia picking her up, throwing her over his shoulder and grabs the lemons with his other hand. Lucia begins to flail her body in opens of freeing herself from her brothers grasp, but who was she kidding? She stood no chance over his towering figure.
Giovanni careful sets his little sister down on the porch and hands her the basket of lemons. "There. Stay there", he demands. "Don't you two ever get sick of fighting?", he tiredly asks.
Lucia finds herself pouting again once more and sticking her bottom lip out. This was a habit of hers when she found herself doing whenever she was embarrassed.
"He always picks on me. I can't help it", she cries.
"Just ignore him. Andrea is only doing it because he knows he can get under your skin".
"Well it's annoying, and he should stop. I can't wait until he goes to college in the fall", she groans crossing her arms over her chest.
"You don't mean that. You'll miss him picking on you when he is gone. You will be all alone with both of us being away at school", Giovanni lectures his sister.
Lucia knew that he was right. Giovanni usually was always right about most things. She would never let him know that though. She sighs to herself and looks up at the sky.
"I think we may get a rain storm", she says pointing to the dark clouds beginning to roll in.
"Yeah, I think you are right. Why don't we go in and help Nonna with lemonade and dinner?", he suggests as he ruffles his hand on the top of her head.
Lucia playfully pushes his hand away following him inside quickly before it begins to rain. Giovanni and Lucia help their Nonna prepare dinner while Andrea sets the table. Whilst dinner was cooking a light rain began to fall across the country side. The rain tapped on the wooden panes causing them to dance down the glass and flood the grass.
Everyone eats peaceful with no arguments, thankfully. They all joke around with one another as Lucia and her brothers fill in their grandparents on what they did the last year. And by the time Lucia finishes dinner the rain begins to slow down. As Lucia is cleaning her plate in the sink she notices the mail man putting a envelope into the mailbox.
Lucia's eye widen in excitement, she quickly rinses her dish off and throws it into the dish washer. She bolts towards the door to head outside to check the mailbox; she doesn't even stop to grab her shoes. The wet grass spreads between Lucia's toes as she makes her way the mailbox. The scent of wet wood and dirt fill her nose, the air feels crisp and clean compared to the hot, muggy air earlier in the day.
Lucia opens the mailbox to reveal that indeed there was a envelope addressed to Lucia Serra from the boy. She squeals quietly to herself. Lucia slowly walks towards the hamic that was tied between two big trees in her grandparents yard. Lucia is quick to rip open the letter to be faced with messy scribbled writing.
