It's move-in day. I have to meet my roommate today.
Lord, please don't make her be some crazy girl who tries to murder me or something. Please.
We work exhaustingly all day and then the time comes. I have to meet her. I go to my room and unlock the door. There's a short, dark-haired girl standing in the middle of the room. She turns around and nervously smiles at me.
"Hey! I'm Callie. You must be Ren. I'm so happy to finally meet you! Do you want to go to dinner? It starts in a couple minutes."
"Hi. Umm no I'm okay. I'm actually going to go for a run right now. See you later though?"
"Yeah! Sure! No problem. Let me know if you need anything!"
To be honest, I was a little let down. I don't know what I was expecting, it's not very likely that every pair of college roommates turn into best friends. Maybe she's like Beth and just needs some time to warm up to me. It is a bit awkward sharing a tiny room with a stranger. I'll let her come to me and not pressure her.
Dinner is fine. We all eat together and discuss how it was to meet our new roommates. Everyone says their roommates are just fine and maybe mine is just shy. I nod in agreement. James got along really well with one of his. He even brought him to dinner with us. He's really nice. And tall. I wouldn't mind adding him to the friend group though. The more the merrier, in my opinion.
The semester starts tomorrow and we're all really anxious about it. Honestly, I kinda forgot I was here to go to school and not just make new friends and hang out with them. Mom would be proud.

School's been on for a few weeks now and everything is going really, really great. I'm loving life at the moment. Aside from the occasional panic attack, everything is perfect. I even made a really close friend who has the same major as me! Her name is Taylor. She's basically my other half. We do everything together, and when we're not together, we're texting or talking on the phone. Everything is so different yet better than I had expected.
Me and James have become really close ever since that day we bonded over music. He's honestly one of my best friends. Today's his and Aubrey's birthday and we got them a cake that we're going to have after dinner. I have a late class but they said they didn't mind waiting for me to eat the cake.
After my class, I rush over to the dining hall and make it just in time for cake. James even saved a seat for me next to him. Beth sends me a funny look across the table.
What was that about?
After dinner and cake, we all go back home and hang out in the common area for a while. One by one, everyone goes to bed, eventually leaving me, James, and Beth. She slowly gets up in the middle of our conversation and says she's going to bed. Before she leaves, she winks at me and says
"Have fuuuun!"
I look at her weird and say goodnight and then turn to James. He's looking at me, a puzzling expression on his face.
"What's wro-"
"Should I break up with my girlfriend?" It gets very quiet between the two of us. I don't know how to react. I'm not even sure why he's asking me this instead of one of his roommates.
"Why are you asking me this?"
"...you're my friend. And I value your opinion. I've been thinking about it for a while, I just...I don't know."
"well is there a reason why you've been thinking about it?" He scoots closer to me on the couch and grabs the blanket I'm using and moves it so that we're now sharing it, closer then ever so that we can whisper. A conversation only me and him can hear. My breath catches in my throat a little. I've never been this close to a boy before.
