Sun. Why does everyone love it? Heat. The sweat dribbled down my neck. Burn. I rubbed my shoulder with cold aloe vera to soothe my peeling, vibrant skin. Bright. I pushed my circular, pink sunglasses up my nose yet the vivid light still managed to break through and cause my eyes to squint. Boiling. I fanned myself with my Seventeen magazine to try and cool off my already burning exterior. Demanding. I lathered myself with sunscreen in the hopes my already cherry colored skin wouldn't develop any more red pigment. Sun. Annoying. Heat. Sweating. Burn. Stinging. Bright. Blinding. Boiling. Fanning. Demanding. Applying. More. And more. And more. Sun. Heat. Burn. Bright. Boiling. Demanding.
I hate the sun.
I laid on my ocean blue towel under my colorful beach umbrella. The sun was finally hiding behind the clouds. I stopped fanning myself with my magazine and started to flip through it. Every single page was about summer, and swimsuits, and surfing and sunshine. I felt the sun on my legs again and flopped my magazine over my face. I adjusted my peachy two piece swimsuit and moved further under the umbrella to avoid all of the annoying rays of sunshine.
Children were screaming of laughter and building sandcastles everywhere. Two teenagers were throwing a beach ball next to me. The ocean was full of tan surfers and foamy bubbles. Wave after wave crashed on the beach, reaching farther and farther up the shoreline each time. I let my hands fall to my sides and closed my eyes, trying to shut out all outside noise.
"That final wave was totally off the hook man!" I hear a deep voice say.
"I know man, I'm so stoked to go out again tomorrow!" another voice said.
"Oh yeah about that, I can't go out tomorrow, I have to work."
"Aw total bummer. Catch you later dude!"
I felt the sand next to me move and sighed. Why did I come here?
Suddenly, I heard a loud noise right behind me and felt the sun come in contact with my skin again. I sat up immediately and looked for an answer as to why I was exposed to the blazing beams of the sun. I grabbed gave up after a few seconds of searching but then I saw a tall boy with messy, curly brown hair stand up next to me. His board was a few feet in front of him and he rubbed his eye and groaned.
"Are you kidding me right now?" I said, giving him a nasty scowl.
"Aw snaps, my bad, Sugar, no worries, easy fix" he said, moving to fix my umbrella.
I watched him as he got dusted the sand off his tan body. He wore short, light blue swim shorts and had a loose, colorful shirt which was completely unbuttoned wrapped around him. His eyes were a bright greenish blue color and he had sandy, light brown hair.
I sighed in annoyance, very impatiently waiting for him to finish.
He looked up at me. "Jeesh Peaches, chill, I'm almost done."
Just as those words tumbled from his rose colored lips, the umbrella fell again and small sand clouds flurried around it. He sighed and pursed his lips together.
"You know, Gingersnap, I could really use your help."
I reluctantly stood up and shuffled over to the other side of the umbrella and held it up as he pushed in into the white sand. "Thank you darling" he said with a soft smile.
"Maybe if you had just watched where you were going, you wouldn't have to be helping me right now."
"Whoa, so we're a bit feisty huh? Why are you in such a rush to get this umbrella up?" he asked, still attempting to nail the umbrella in the sand.
"I'm just trying to get shade. It's too hot out." He looked up at me and laughed. "Too hot? Get used to it Sugarplum, this is nothing compared to our actual hot days." I rolled my eyes. "Can we just get this done?" He turned and continued to work. "Whatever you say."
