I smoothed over my outfit carefully and continued to stare myself down in the mirror, looking for any more slight imperfections. I finally decided to get a second opinion on my outfit. I knocked on Heather's bedroom door and patiently waited right outside.
She opened the door after about a minute and flashed me a quick smile. "Hey girl! You look cute, gotta run!" She walked right into my arms and I lightly pushed her back into her room.
"Hold on, H. I need a second opinion. Do you think this outfit is good?" I asked, smoothing out my shirt for the hundredth time.
"Yes! Like I said, you look adorable. Perfect outfit for date night. How's mine?" She moved her hands up and down to display her mini skirt and off the shoulder top.
"It's so pretty! Michael will love it." I paused to think about her response before immediately firing back.
"Wait, what do you mean by date night?"
"Um, you and Jack are going to the beach together."
I put my hands on my hips and looked into her eyes. "Yeah, as friends."
She sighed and laughed at my apparent gullibility. "Are any of his friends going?"
"No."
"So it's just you and him?"
I shrugged my shoulders. "Yeah."
"Oh honey," she shook her head back and forth smiling, "that is one hundred percent a date."
"No! No it's not. He said we were just going as friends."
"Face it, Saige, you got played. You two, alone on a beach at night. That is a date! But that's okay. You two are cute together. I gotta go, see you tomorrow, if I get lucky." She winked and moved past me.
I was quick to follow as she winded around the kitchen and slipped on her shoes. "Wait no! Heather I don't want to go on a date with him! Help me get out of this!" I tugged on her shirt like a child would cling to their mother's leg.
"Nope, can't help with this one, hun, I'm already late. It's too late to bail on him now. Go. Remember what I always tell you? Never waste a good outfit."
I played with the corners of my shirt, contemplating whether or not I should go.
"Have fun!" she kissed my cheek and walked out the door but turned towards me before she left. "But not too much fun." She winked once again before shutting the door behind her.
I put on my loafers and grabbed my brown leather bag. I looked at myself in the mirror for one last time. I wore a red shirt that tied in the middle with flared sleeves along with high waisted dark blue bell bottoms. My midriff was slightly showing causing me to continuously pull my pants up and tug my shirt down. Half of my hair was pulled back with a white ribbon and the rest cascaded down my shoulders. I had beaded bracelets on both of my wrists and many rings on my fingers. After staring at my reflection for another minute, I finally forced myself to walk out of the door.
I walked to the beach slowly, taking in the cool breeze. I had to continue to push myself to keep walking and I tried my very best not to turn around and bail on him. Whenever I'm around Jack, anger and annoyance bubbles through me. Every word that comes out of his mouth is normally unnecessary and irritating. I hope he doesn't win this bet because I genuinely don't think I can bear to see him every single day of my life. He's so full of himself. His ego is simply larger than the ocean. It's even larger than all of the ocean's combined. He thinks so highly of himself and his confidence is infuriating. He thinks all the girls just love him and he doesn't have to do anything to get what he wants. He thinks he can just win over any girl. Well not me. For the first time in his life, he's going to have to actually work for something only to lose to a girl.
