XIII. NOT AFRAID

THE LOSERS ARRIVED AT NEIBOLT, dumping their bikes and skateboard in front of the rusty gate.

Calliope took a sharp inhale of breath. This was going to be the fight of their lives. The seven kids filed in one by one, Bill leading the group, shining his flashlight across the rotten walls.

"Stan?" The losers turned around at Ben's voice, eyes landing upon Stan who was still on the porch.

Calliope's eyes softened at the boy. That's all he was. A boy, scared out of his wits. They were all scared.

"S-Stan, we all have to go." Bill told him. "B-Beverly was right. If we split up like last time the clown will kill us one by one. But if we stick together, all of us, we- we'll win."

Stan looked down, understanding. He soon entered the house, and they continued on their way.

They made their way through the eerie place, sticking close together. Calliope looked around with hardened eyes, afraid that if she didn't focus on the task at hand she'd remember what last happened when she was here, and freak out.

"Hey, Eddie, you got a quarter?" Richie spoke up as they reached the well.

"I wouldn't want to make a wish in that fucking thing." Eddie shook his head.

Ben peered down the well, shining in torch. "Beverly?" His voice echoed. Nothing.

"How are we supposed to get down there?" Mike asked. Bill turned around, seeing a rope laying on the floor.

Seconds later, with group effort, the rope is tied securely to the well pulley.

"All right, come on." Bill stepped up, grabbing ahold of the rope and carefully descending down. Eddie and Stan followed.

"M'lady." Richie motioned Calliope to the rope, causing her to let out a breathy chuckle.

With tense and clammy hands, Calliope climbed down the rope, not daring to look at the dark pit below her. She reached the tunnel where the others were, feeling hands grab her by the waist to pull her in.

"Holy shit." She breathed, steadying herself on the ground. "I need to work on my upper body strength."

Richie climbed down next, then Ben, leaving Mike at the top.
