II. THE BARRENS

AS PLANNED, the following morning Calliope met Bill, Eddie and Richie at Eddie's house. Much to Richie's dismay, of course. He had been ignoring her the whole morning, but Callie told herself it was nothing.

Callie played with the hem of her shorts as she watched the boys raid Eddie's cupboard. She had only just met Eddie, so she didn't feel like it was her place to go stealing all his food.

"Take everything but the delicious deals, guys, my mom loves them." Eddie told his friends, leaning against the kitchen counter next to Callie. "First you said the barrens, and now you're saying the sewer. I mean, what if we get caught?" Eddie said.

"Wait, the sewer? Since when?" Callie's eyes widened. She knew she shouldn't have worn her good shoes.

"We won't, and t-the sewers are p-public works. We're the public a-aren't we?" Bill told Eddie, ignoring Callie.

"Hey Eddie, these your birth control pills?" Richie said, opening a cupboard filled with Eddie's medication. Callie giggled, earning an elbow nudge from Eddie.

He walked over to Richie, shutting the cupboard. "Yeah, and I'm saving them for you sister. This is private stuff."

The four began to head out, Callie with her skateboard tucked under her arm at the front of the group. "Eddie bear...". Eddie's mom stopped the group, "Where are you boys off to in such a rush?" Her eyes flicked over Callie, judgement glazing over her eyes before they returned to normal as they rested upon Eddie.

"U-u-um just my backyard Mrs K." Bill told her. "I got a new...."

"Croquet set." Callie spoke, helping Bill out.

"Yeah, geez, spit it out, B-B-Bill." Richie mocked, surprising Callie. That was the first time he had acknowledged her presence since she arrived.

"Okay." Mrs Kaspbrak said, "Oh, and sweety, don't go rolling around on the grass. Especially if it's just been cut. You know how bad your allergies can get."

The group went to head out again, but was stopped by Mrs K. "Eddie... aren't you forgetting something?" Eddie sighed, looking between his friends, before looking back at his mother. He slouched over to her, giving her a quick peck on the cheek.

Bill hit Richie in the stomach as he began to laugh. Callie watched Eddie with a small smile. "Do you want one from me to Mrs K?" Eddie glared as he walked back over, pulling Richie out the door. "Sorry mommy!"
