"We have to move !" Charlie yelled as he got up and I followed behind him.
"Where!? I don't know this place!" I yelled panicked while all I could hear was the heavy footsteps moving in closer.
"I don't know. Just hide Vera!" He yelled as we turned a corner , our boots sliding over the gravel. I ducked underneath an old desk , pulling the chair closer to me as I tried to make out their movements or at the very least their voices.
And then I heard it.
"Tell her to come out or I'll shoot you right here . Right now. " They said while I started to shake.
"Don't do it Vera ! He's bluffing!" I heard Charlie's voice while a million things started to run through my head. We were goners for sure.
"Am I ?" He said right before I heard a gunshot and Charlie's agonizing scream.
"Okay! Okay! Just don't shoot !" I said putting my hands up and crawling out of my spot. "Don't shoot him." I said while I walked closer seeing him hunched over in pain. "What do you want from us?"
"What I want is to know why you're here and not home with your families where you belong ." The gaurd that shot Charlie said while another grabbed me by the arm.
"We didn't even hear the sirens . I swear ." I said trying to get out of their hold while he walked closer.
"I bet. You being so far out of your territory and all. So I'm going to ask you one last time , and don't you dare lie to me . What , were you doing ?" He sneered close to my face while my eyes couldn't leave Charlie's pain filled body lying in the corner.
I took a deep breath saying ; "we were just out on a date. We didn't think we would be out this long. It won't happen again, I promise. " I said while he nod his head and the gaurds let me go.
"It better not. Now get home." He said leaving while I rushed over to Charlie , turning him on his side.
"Are you okay !?" I said , my eyes landing on the wound on his right shoulder.
"A date huh ?" He said , still managing to smirk and make jokes through the pain.
"Shut up. I just saved your sorry butt. Come on , we have to get you to the pit so I can clean you." I said helping him up as we walked through the crisp morning air down the streets of Norview.
"You're a real one Vera Hood." He said in admiration while I removed the bullet from his wound making him bite down.
"Sorry." I apologized, cleaning him up. "How many times am I going to have to clean up your blood here ?" I said laughing while he watched me move around him like a hawk.
"As many as it takes for you to notice me."
"Don't be silly. I notice you Charlie." I said nonchalant trying my best to stitch him up.
"Yeah. But not the way I want you to." He said, jumping off the table and walking out without another word. I had no idea what just happened , but I also knew I had to get home . So, that's what I did.
The next few days went by painfully slow as I didn't see Charlie once. He never showed up for lunch anymore or for any of the times we were supposed to meet at the wall. By the end of the week I've accepted my fate that , he might just be avoiding me. Who was I kidding? He was definitely avoiding me. I just wish I knew why ...
"Sorry honey , he's got uh... some chores to finish. I'll tell him you stopped by." His mom said with a forced smile before she closed the door infront of me. I can't say that I blame her , this wasn't the first time this week I've tried to see him like this but each time just another elaborate excuse was made up. I don't even know why I was trying. If he wanted to talk to me he would talk to me , right?
Packing up my station's supplies, I head out for the night going back home. There was no use for me to waste even more of my time waiting around for him just to not have him show up. I'm better than this. So instead I washed up and took dinner to my room , curling up againts the fire place with a Jane Austen book. Sense and Sensibility. Ironic since I had neither at the moment but it was a good way for me to clear my head. I found that escaping to another time and place often did wonders for my emotional state.
"Vera ?" I heard mom from the other side of the door as I stood up and let her in.
"There's someone here to see you ." She said looking painfully uncomfortable as I scrunched my eyebrows together in confusion before walking out to the living room. And there , with his snow drenched clothing, lips turning a tender blue colour , stood Charlie. He was the last person I expected to see after he abandoned me for the last two weeks.
"You should go." I said hostile turning back around.
"Vera please, let me explain."
"Explain what ? Cause I've been making a fool out of myself for the last two weeks running after you and now that you're finally man enough to talk about your feelings you just expect me to sit quietly and listen!? " I yelled making my mother disappear like dust in the wind.
"I was kind of hoping, yeah." He said making me roll my eyes and scoff.
"Really ? Well , then you don't know me at all." I said in disbelief before walking back to my room. I couldn't stand the sight of him right now. I thought that him of all people would understand me , but I guess I was wrong about that too.
