I could barely finish my dinner after our little encounter. It was like seeing him was like seeing a ghost or reliving a memory of him. Like he was here but also not here. This wasn't the Charlie I grew up with. The Charlie I knew and loved like a bother would never had shut me out like this , he would never expect me to be submissive to him like he did tonight.
It was like I didn't even know who he was anymore...
"Vera ?" I heard him whisper from my window as I turned on my side , covering my ears with my pillow though it did nothing to drown out his whispering calls.
"Go home Charlie."
"I need to talk to you." He said ,throwing pebbles at my window as I tried my best to ignore him. His stubborness was the thing that annoyed me the most . He never listened!
"Well I don't want to talk to you. So go home. "
"Vera please, it's freezing out here."
"Well, then you should've thought about that before you completely iced me out !" I yelled annoyed, sliding my window open as I watched him climb through.
"Thanks. " he said gratefully, making his way over to the fireplace.
"Don't thank me . I'm giving you one chance and one chance only to explain yourself. Don't waste my time." I said ,closing the window behind me and draping my blanket over my shoulders.
"I like you Vera. There , I said it. " He said frustrated while I blew out a breath , sitting down next to him.
"We've been over this Charlie . We're just friends and that's all we're ever going to be. There's no need to complicate what we already have here." I said softly, putting my hand on his shoulder as I watched him bow his head in disappointment.
"I know. It's just , when I'm around you I can't help myself. You're amazing Vera and I so desperately want to love you."
"And you can . Just , not in a romantic way..." I said while I watched the pain take a physical display on his face. I've friendzoned Charlie more times in my life than I can care to remember, but I've never seen him this hurt by it like I did right now.
"How about we just forget any of this happen and go back to being like it used to be ? " I suggested hopefully while I saw him taking in a deep breath before saying ; "sure" and I pulled him into a hug.
After that , I guess things were a little bit better. It wasn't the same but it also wasn't different either, which I guess was a good thing. Other than the fact that I had to hurt his feelings yet again , we somehow managed to carry on like it didn't even happen.
"So, I have some good news." He said excited, sitting next to me as I took a bite from my apple.
"Great! What is it ?"
"So I may have found an alternative way over the wall. Hear me out first before you shoot me down again." he said making a smile spread across my face, he had to know I was going to be voice of logic here. "Turns out , there's tunnels going underneath the wall through to the other side. It hasn't been used or active since the explosion so I guess it's safe. "
"You guess? Charlie that's great! I'm so proud of you but before I commit myself to getting into a tight space going who knows where , with who knows WHAT could be down there. You need to find out if this is safe or not."
"Okay I hear your concerns but I can protect you from whatever is down there ." he said with a smirk , flexing his muscles.
"I bet. But I don't need your protection . I can look after myself. "
"And I didn't say you can't. Look , before we go down this rabbit hole again would you atleast give me the opportunity to scope it out first before you say no ?" He said pleading with those big brown eyes of his.
"Sure. Whatever. " I said laughing while he mentally high-fived himself I'm sure.
"Hey ! Where are you going ?" I yelled behind him as he took off into a sprint while I was off in my own daze .
"The sooner the better!" Was all he yelled back as I shook my head. He was sure something alright. So imagine how boring and less injuries my day was filled with, with him being off on his own little adventure. I had to admit , I've dreamed about having a day like today to myself but I've never imagined how much I would miss that goofball.
"You're back! What took you so long ?" I said relieved watching him put his bag down on my station.
"Let's just say there's more than one way out. " he said out of breath - like he ran here the whole way - as I watched him take a seat.
"You've got to be kidding me. What do we do now ?"
"Well , for starters it's safe. No mole people or scary monsters down there." He said trying to humour himself while I lightly shoved him.
"Whatever. So what did you find ?"
"How about I tell you over dinner at mine ? My mom's working late. "
"Sounds good but I'm still on the clock"
"Not anymore you're not. " he said , taking my punch card and logging me out for the night.
"You know , it doesn't work like this. Miss Geladi is going to kill me when she finds out. "
"Then we better hurry before she does. " he said with a smirk playing on his lips as he dragged me out there running up to his house.
