MARCELINE AVOIDING HER the next day was expected. However, it didn't sit...right with Bonnibel — she had grown used to having her presence constantly hanging around; a feat she managed to accomplish even though they were in different classes and had separate recesses.
She adjusts the books in her hold, pressing them flush against her chest as she wanders down the hallway after school, smiling and graciously reciprocating the greetings she received along the way.
"Yo, Peebs," she's snapped out of her reverie by an unexpected force to her shoulder, but she barely reacts, merely flashing a grinning Jake an irritated glare.
"Thanks for the warning," she remarks sarcastically, then sighs when she witnesses the brief change of Jake's joyful expression to concern.
She had been in a terrible mood for the past week, to put it lightly. From learning that vampires and demons were real, to the possibility that she was being hunted by the king of demons? A wonderful way to send her into an identity crisis. She had so, so many questions, and coupled with the fact that Marceline was not here to entertain them made her twice as irked.
"Sorry," Bonnibel says quickly, straightening and reorienting her textbooks. Jake maintains a tentative smile, as if unsure if he should stay in a faux chill mood or play the worried friend. "Just─ah─feeling pretty tired."
Jake's brow furrows, clearly not buying it. They had been friends for way too long — Bonnibel would be able to tell that he was lying just as easily.
He chooses to entertain her, clapping her gently on the back. "Go home and get some rest. You need it."
Bonnibel looks down at the books she had been carrying around, mostly learning material for class, but at the top, a title on vampires and other supernatural creatures. She frowns at it. She's never found the need to read up on...subjects like these; she had been convinced that beings like Marceline couldn't possibly exist.
However, her world had been turned upside down just like that.
She lifts her head to offer Jake a reassuring smile. "I'll be fine."
"Cool," he shrugs, and looks down the packed hallway, brightening up when he catches sight of something — or someone. "So...catch you later?"
Bonnibel sees Iris standing by the school doors. "Tomorrow."
"See ya then," Jake turns back, smiles once more, that little hint of worry lingering in his gaze, and jogs to Iris.
"See you," she whispers, gripping her books tighter. No matter. She'd be better off revising the day's lessons and concentrating on her homework rather than wondering where Marceline was.
She was wrong.
What was she doing outside the swimming complex?
Why had her feet carried her here? She should be going home, picking up more books, studying, anything but coming to Marceline's most-frequented spot (at least, she's sure) after school. But who was she trying to fool? Everything she needed to do had already been done — all she would do was research even more on the supernatural, like she had been doing all week.
