part five: we're dead

Kai and Adam jumped apart. "What. The. FUCK!" A tiny whimper escaped Kai's mouth as he moved behind Adam. "WE LEAVE FOR FIVE MINUTES AND YOU'VE GONE COMPLETELY GAY?" Kai's mom just silently looked at the boys in disgust.

"Actually, Kai's still bi, and he can date whoever he wants to." OH NO OH NO ADAM JUST TALKED BACK TO MY DAD! HE IS GONNA KILL US BOTH NOW! Kai's thoughts were everywhere, he was full of fear, anxiety, stress... this all felt too familiar.

Kai's dad snapped his head up to look at Adam's. "What did you just say to me?" "I said Kai can date whoever he wants, boy or girl." Kai's dad was speechless for a moment, Kai didn't talk back and he wasn't really expecting his boyfriend to either.

"Well i'm his father and I know what's best for him! You're just-" "His boyfriend. That's what I am, and unlike you i'm actually in his life! How can you even call yourself his dad if you're never even here to act like it!"

Kai's parents stood gaping at Adam, he was right but it hurt like hell to hear him say that. Kai was looking up to study Adam's face. His eyebrows were burrowed, his mouth slightly open to take in air from the yelling, nose twitching here and there. He studied his eyes more closely than the rest of his face though, they were full of anger and hatred while they shot daggers at Kai's dad.

Seeing Adam like this made him relieved, happy even. He knew he loved Adam but now, seeing how much Adam cared for him and how mad he was at how Kai was treated at home, this made butterflies come to life in his stomach as a smile crept on his face.

Kai's mom noticed how he was looking at Adam. "... look..." she managed to get herself to tap on her husband and point at him. Adam noticed and they all turned to look at Kai, who was still staring at Adam like a lovesick puppy in a trance.

This caused Adam to smile and grab both of Kai's hands while they stared into each others eyes. "Just go. Leave and when you come back we'll talk about this." This was the most his mom had said all night. "No! We're setting this right here, right now." Kai and Adam exchanged a look as they turned to watch Kai's parents who were now fighting.

Kai's mom didn't really mind anymore, it would take some getting used to but she saw how happy they were and figured she had no place to tear them apart. Kai's dad, however, was grossed out and not okay with the relationship at all. While the two argued the boys slipped out the front door and started to walk to Adam's.

They walked all the way there in silence, Kai needed some time to relax and Adam needed to cool off. When they arrived on the front porch, Adam took Kai's hand, opened the door, and led them inside.

He looked over and saw the scared look on Kai's face and whispered "It's ok, I got you." in his ear, calming him down. "Hey mom, hey dad! I'm home!" His parents called him into the kitchen without looking up from what they were doing.

"I thought you said you were sleeping over at Kai's when you called us, did something happen?" His mom was still looking down at the food she was making when she asked, and his dad was still grading papers.

"Actually yeah." Adam began to rub the back of his neck with his free hand. His mom and dad looked up at him, at first concerned they had gotten into a fight or something, until they both saw Kai standing in their kitchen holding Adam's hand.

They watched the Kai fidget a little, he was scared they would react like his parents had. "Aw that is so sweet, so Kai's the boy you've been telling us you liked!" Adam laughed, "Yeah he is, and we're dating." His dad stood up and gave him a pat on the back and shook Kai's hand.

"Good for you guys, and Adam, just so you know, we approve of your first boyfriend." He gave Kai a smile and sat back down to continue grading papers. "Thanks guys, that really means a lot to us. Mainly because Kai's parents didn't exactly feel the same way."

His parents both gave him a raised eyebrow in response, silently telling him to continue. "They didn't exactly respond the same way as you guys, and so he needs a place to stay for a  little bit, is that ok?"

Suddenly Kai's unnatural silence throughout this whole conversation seemed a lot less weird to Adam's parents. "Of course it is, he can stay as long as he needs! Are you ok Kai what happened?" Adam's mom saw Kai begin to tear up after she asked what happened and she pulled him into a hug.

He started to sob into her shoulder, not wanting to but unable to stop. He felt so embarrassed but also enjoyed the feeling of an adult comforting him, he wasn't used to it and cherished her genuine concern.

Adam sighed as he watched his boyfriend cry. Now he knew why Kai had so many issues with fighting and his parents. Adam's dad came and pulled him into a side hug, squeezing his shoulder. They stood and watched Kai cry while his mom hugged him.

Adam felt so many emotions, mad at Kai's parents, happy with his parents, sad that Kai was so upset, and he couldn't even imagine how much this must be on Kai. Once he calmed down Adam took his arm and told his parents they would be in his room if they needed anything, pulling Kai towards the stairs.

Once upstairs Kai sat down on Adam's bed, Adam sitting down next to him. Adam pulled him into a hug and rubbed his hands through his hair. "I'm right here Kai, I got you... We've had a long day, do you wanna get some sleep?" Adam felt Kai softly nod up and down so he got up to get them both a change of clothes.

After they had both gotten set up to sleep, Adam laid back on his bed. Kai laid next to him, resting his head on Adam's chest and wrapping his arms around Adam's waist.

He smiled and wrapped one arm around Kai's back. The feeling of Adam rubbing is back and the silence of the dark room, Kai was asleep in only a few minutes. Adam felt his breathing slow and he too fell asleep.
