Everything was going smoothly. Still playing football and training with the swim team. And somehow keeping it all from Beverly. Mostly thanks to Lainey and Coach helping me fabricate it out. My reason for staying so late after school, I was in the school musical, Blood Brothers.
I came in one night after school and Beverly immediately engulfed me in her smothering love. "So what part in Blood Brothers did you get, boopy?" She asked me as she was making her infamous lasagna. "Umm, I'm just in the chorus, not really much of a point coming to see me," I said quickly. "Of course I'll be there snuggle-monster, you are such a wee superstar performing." I sighed a little before exclaiming, "Oh goody! Can I use the phone?" Murray shouted from the den, pantsless as usual, "Bevy, I'm hungry!" he wailed. Beverly shouted back, "it's okay dinner's nearly ready." she carried on, "yes, of course, you can use the phone sugar lump."
I ran into the den and picked up the phone trying to find Lainey's number. Murray called over to me, "Oi, moron! Who's phone number are you looking for?" I replied shyly, "Lainey's." He shouted back over at me, "it's under Erica's list." I finally found it and dialled it up. "Hi, Lainey," my voice quieter than I intended. "What's the matter, sweetie," she asked after picking up. "Can we have a Waffle House meeting? It's kind of an emergency." She replied, "of course, pick you up at 7?" "Yes please, thank you, Lainey. You're the best!" I replied and put down the phone.
Lainey picked me up at 7 right on the dot and we drove down to our favourite hang out spot. "So what's going on," Lainey asked as we settled into our booth at Waffle House. "Beverly knows I'm in the play." Lainey replied, "yeah I know, I told her, that's why you are staying late, remember?" I laughed, "yeah I know, obviously. But now she wants to come and see me in it." "Oh hell, we really didn't think that part through. Well, you know what we need to do... you need to to be part of the show." I sighed, "oh hell. I already have enough to do. No offence but I really don't want to be in your musical." "Some taken. But don't worry. What we'll do is we'll just teach you all the chorus choreography and music." I groaned a little, "fine... thank you so much, Lainey." "It's no bother sweetie." she smiled just as our food arrived.
I got home late and was subjected to scrutiny from Beverly, as well as her insistence upon doing a Blood Brothers rehearsal. I went to bed that night almost wishing I could just come clean and tell Beverly I was on the football and swim teams. However, she would lose her mind and force me to quit which would be my worst nightmare. Football means too much to me.
The next morning I woke up to Beverly's smothering nature. I think she was excited I was doing the show because she seemed more dancy and prancy than usual. I was on my way to school with Lainey and she asked if I was feeling better after last night. I nodded and asked her, "can we do a rehearsal tonight? I need time away from Beverly." She replied, "of course Amster, why what's going on?" I admitted, "just Beverly getting to me a bit." Lainey laughed as we pulled into the school parking lot, "I get that, don't worry."
I followed Lainey in and went to see Liz about my geometry homework. I was really struggling with geometry and I really didn't want my GPA slipping. Mr Duggar's Spanish class was already proving tough and English with CB was also proving a challenge. The last thing I needed was to be ruled ineligible. "Hey Ms Fleming, can you help me with the geometry homework. I'm really struggling at the moment." I admitted as I went into her class. "Of course Amy, come on in." "Thanks, Ms Fleming," I smiled, my voice quiet. "While I've got you here, how do you fancy joining the soccer team. We are doing our winter training at the moment. I know you are a very busy young lady at the moment, so it's okay if you say no." I thought for a moment before saying, "sure, why not. I'll join the soccer team. I'll work out the logistics later." I really didn't think it through but nonetheless, at least the football and soccer seasons are at the same time.
