Chapter 21There's a slight chill in the air that is making me shiver, but I control it. Somehow I have this eerie feeling that I'm not alone or safe. My survival instincts kick in, making me remain still as the dead, trying to access the situation with my other senses.
"I'll see you very soon, little lamb." I hear a mocking whisper in my ear. "Don't think I'll keep my eyes off you." There's a pull on my hair, making me instinctively groan in pain. "One way or another, blood always comes first, and you are not blood." The feminine voice spits out before my head slams against something very hard, cold, and wet. I want to cry out in pain yet I continue to remain still, scared of waking up to the reality of my situation.
"Helena-"
"I don't have to remind you what will happen if you breathe a word to Bullet about this, right Roberto?"
"No."
"Good." I hear the click of heels move away from me when a phone rings. "Well, I was just thinking about you." I can practically feel the smile in her voice as she answers. "You know exactly what I want, Marcus." Marcus? He's okay? "I thought I told you before, I don't take no for an answer." The coldness in her voice scares me. "Have fun finding your toy." She taunts. I hear something fall to the floor.
I open my eyes a little out of curiosity to see her red heel destroy the phone on the floor. I didn't even see her take her gun out before she aims and shoots it in rage. My heart drops at how quick and deadly she can be. She bares her anger to view, but it's not a crazy anger. No. She's more composed and poised in her anger which makes her even more frightening to me.
Her mood changes to a cold one. "Verrà a casa. Torna sempre a casa." (He'll come home. He always comes home.) She says in an almost reassuring way at the phone. I realize I finally found a part of Marcus's life and now I wish I hadn't. I pray on everything in this universe that I get out of this alive.
I make eye contact with Roberto. His shoulders tense. My eyes widen at being caught awake. Please don't rat me out. He doesn't show any sort of inkling about what he will do, but I'm pretty sure I won't make it out of this unscathed. I gulp, my fear probably showing as clear as day.
"Bullet is waiting for you." His voice booms in the silence of the night. He takes his eyes off mine and turns to Helena. "If you're set on going against him in secret, I suggest we leave now."
Helena gives him the coldest look. She points the gun to his chest. The only space between them. "Watch your words, Roberto. You don't know why I'm doing this. One day you'll thank me." She pulls the trigger, but there's only a click. She smiles at his wavering relief. "Il sangue è per la famiglia. Remember?" (Blood is for family.)
She walks away from him. The sounds of her heels creating a chilling echo. Roberto looks down, his fist clench like he's holding back. He looks at me with disgust. "This is the only time I will help you." He takes out a bulky phone and throws it on the floor. He then leaves the same way Helena went.
I watch at he turns the corner, disappearing out of sight. When I hear the sound of a car speed off, I knew they were gone. I crawl towards the phone, ignoring the massive headache that weights me down from having my head slammed against concrete. With the phone in my hand, I roll to my back and take a couple of deep breaths before trying to stand. Struggling, I hold on to the brick wall for support. I feel like the air can't properly reach my lungs. My forehead feels numb. My legs are unstable. I feel like I don't have complete control over my body with all the aches and sores that are limiting me.
I see a few large green dumpsters against the wall of the alleyway. I use them for support to get out of it. All my remaining strength vanishes when I collapse on the sidewalk. The street light illuminating me from above. The silence is wary because I don't know where I am or if other dangers await me in my state. Either way, the silence tells me I'm completely alone here with no one to help me.
