Chapter 7King was a little distant in his thoughts after what I said and I knew why. I had crushed his dreams. He probably expected a different answer that I couldn't give.
It didn't take long for the media to show up too. I guess someone recognized me and called them. The hotel's secruity was able to escort us into King's car. Some of them tried to follow us, but the SUV blocked him long enough for us to drive away in peace.
The silence is eating at me. "I'm sorry." I murmur. "I didn't think our date would end like this."
"Don't worry about it. It comes with who you are. I kinda expected it, I just didn't think it would be that crazy."
"Sorry."
"It's fine, Chloe. It's not a big deal."
For you. I wanted to say, but I held my tongue. We both just let the silence awkwardly linger again. Suddenly, lights begin to flash red and blue behind us. The siren screaming in the background.
I frown at King. "Were you speeding?" I ask him. It's the only logical reason we'd be pulled over.
"No." He's becomes tense. He pulls over and places his hands on top of the steering wheel.
I calmly sit. Hopefully, the cop finishes fast so I can get back to the hotel. The awkwardness between King and I is too uncomfortable.
The Officer knocks on the window. King lowers it instantly.
"Name?"
"King James." Wow, I wonder if his mom named him that on purpose.
"You from around here?"
"No. I live in North Miami, Florida."
The officer clicked his teeth. "Is this your car?"
"No. It's a rental."
The officer nods. "Give me your lincense and registration."
I lean over. "Hello, Officer. Is there a reason you pulled us over?" I ask politely. "He wasn't speeding."
"I'm going to have to ask you to sit straight, please." He directed his words to me before looking back at King. "Lincense and registration. If you don't comply I can arrest you, boy." The aggression in his voice and the degratory way he said 'boy' took me back.
"I have it." King tried to say calmly, but you can tell just how hard he's trying to contain his anger. "It's in the glove compartment. Can I reach over and get it?" He asks.
I now know what King is doing. He's keeping it safe because he realizes this isn't a regular pull over with a reason. We've been stopped because we're black. The disgust look the officer has on, and the way he keeps his guard up is a clear proof of that.
"Do you have any weapons in the car?" The officer asks proving my point and confirming my suspicions.
"Of course he doesn't." I snap at him.
"Ma'am I wasn't talking to you. If you interrupt me again, I will have to bring you down to the station for refusing to comply. I suggest you remain silent."
I was about to open my mouth to respond, but King stops me. "Chloe, I'll handle this." He gives me a meaningful look that shuts me up. He's scared and angry. I can clearly see it. "Can I reach for my license and registration that you asked for?"
"You didn't answer my question, boy."
"I don't have any weapons on me or in this car."
The office nods towards him. "Be slow with your movements. We don't want a problem now." I don't miss the underlying threat of the officer. Is he...? Threatening us? Is this really happening right now? King slowly takes the documents out and hands it to the officer. "I'm going to run this, don't step out the car." He warns.
