SIX

“You want a martyr? I’ll be one. Because enough’s enough, we’re done.”

-King for a Day, Pierce the Veil ft. Kellin Quinn

“How is my leg perfectly fine?” I wondered aloud, frowning in confusion, “I could’ve sworn Rico broke it.”

“Supernaturals heal a lot faster than humans,” CC explained, holding a syringe in her hand. I stared uneasily at the object. “Now stay still. I need to take some of your blood.”

I complied, intimidated by the blue-haired girl’s icy glare. “That doesn’t explain anything.” I protested in annoyance.

“For someone with a 4.0 GPA, you sure are dumb.” CC retorted, sticking the needle into my arm and extracting my blood. I cursed at the initial sting I felt as the needle pierced my skin.

“Are you saying I’m supernatural?” I asked once the pain subsided, “But I’m human.”

“Can a human’s broken leg heal in less than four hours?” CC said pointedly, “Can a human be affected by a lumina ray?”

  “A luma what?”

“Never mind that. The point is you’re definitely not human.” CC told me, “And this blood sample of yours is gonna prove it.”

“Are my brothers human?” I blurted out abruptly, the thought just occurring to me. I had never thought of my brothers as anything but human until that moment.

“They’re Skysh.” Cecelia answered, pulling the needle out of my arm. I yelped in pain, clutching my arm. As my mind processed her words, I remembered Jade had mentioned them to me before she’d died:

“The Skysh have been dictating Anathema for way too long.”

“Aren’t the sissies supposed to be the bad guys?” I questioned, “Like aren’t you people against them or something? Jade and Rico were talking about them before.”

“First of all, it’s the Skysh, not sissies.” Nonetheless CC smiled at my mistake, “And second of all, the Skysh is a species. Not all of them are bad. Just most of them. Plus the Skysh don’t like your brothers because your mother was human. According to them, your brothers aren’t ‘pure’.” CC made air quotations when saying the word pure.

“So these Skysh, or whatever you call them , don’t like my brothers because they’re not entirely like them,” I snorted at how immature and stupid the Skysh seemed, “What a bunch of dramatic sissies. I think that’s what I’ll call them from now on: The Sissies.”
