“Smile. The worst is yet to come. We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun.”
-Smile, Mikky Ekko
That night I couldn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, the image of my mother falling her to her death jolted me awake. I tried taking sleeping pills, but it was like my body was immune to them or something. I lay awake on my bed, not daring to close my eyes and see that horrid scene once again. Sleeping on a chair to the right of my bed was Axel who refused to let me leave his sight after I had broken down in front of me. I smiled at how peaceful and innocent he looked. It felt like forever since I’ve seen him look so vulnerable.
Suddenly I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to do something other than just lying down and attempting to distract myself from my exhaustion. I swing my feet over to the edge of the bed, and placed them onto the floor soundlessly. I tiptoed out the room, careful not to wake my older brother up from his peaceful slumber. Once I exited the room, I entered a dark hallway that seemed endless due to the darkness. I walked down the hallway aimlessly until I finally found a room with light emitting from it.
The first thing I smelled when entering the room was the sweet, sugary smell of cinnamon rolls. Sure enough there was a tray of cinnamon rolls on the counter. I assumed that I’d walked into the kitchen due to all the cooking utensils and baked products. The smell of the cinnamon rolls were so overpowering a bit of drool trickled out my mouth. I reached out to grab one, and that one became two, two became three, and so on.
“How the hell are you skinny?”
I jumped, accidentally throwing my bitten cinnamon roll in the air. Storm caught the roll effortlessly, and ate it in one swift bite. My heart was beating erratically, and I willed (Ha, ha. Will Solace.) for it to calm down. Storm stared at me with a look of amusement in his eyes.
“Genetics.” I answered once my heartbeat had settled, “And don’t you dare try sneaking up on me like that with your creepy supernatural ways. I watched The Vampire Diaries, y’know. I know how to stake vampires.”
The redhead laughed; he had one of those stupid kind of laughs you couldn’t help but laugh at. “The Vampire Diaries is completely fiction. Vampires aren’t like that in real life.” He told me, disbelief laced in his tone along with amusement, “Plus I’m a mage.” Seeing the blank look I wore, he explained, “Mages are kinda like wizards and witches. Not vampires.”
I nodded in understanding. “So you’re not secretly Damon Salvatore?” I questioned, wearing a small grin.
“That depends,” He said, shrugging and then he smiled cheekily at me. “on whether or not you’re secretly Elena.”
I laughed so hard tears came out of my eyes. “I did not think you were the type of guy to tell girls pick up lines, Teddy Bear.” I beamed at him, “It’s like I keep finding out the weirdest things about you.”
