"we say we're friends but i'm catchin' you across the room, it makes no sense cause we're fightin' over what we do, and there's no way that i'll end up being with you, but friends don't look at friends that way."

The smell of alcohol, sweaty bodies, and the sweet salty waves of the ocean. Cool water hitting at her ankles brings an inner uprising of calmness to her body. One deep breathe follows after another, in an effort to control the building anxiety on the brim to erupt. Twisting at the silver ring on the middle finger of her left hand, she takes in a slow inhale of the summery breeze.
It was the first time Izzy had seen Rafe after a long period of a couple months. The moment her eyes landed on his figure, every stigmatic memory flooded back into her head. Every traumatic thought buried in the depths her brain returned in a matter of seconds.
Control. Control yourself. She repeated the words over and over to herself.
Crossing her arms, she grips at them tightly. Izzy felt so incredibly small and vulnerable as she gradually made her way back to the light of the party. Breaths rushed and sharp, the hustle and bustle of the people only added to the subtle panic within her.
"Iz!"
Sitting on a wooden log Kie calls for Izzy, but immediately stands up and jogs over to her friend in a hurry.
"Are you okay?" Kie asks in concern, grabbing onto Izzy's arms and examining her.
Confusingly squinting her eyes, Izzy nods, "I'm fine, why?"
Kiara puts her hands on her hips, "Word got around that Rafe was here on the same side of the beach you were on so I got worried."
"Oh. He's gone now so it's alright. Nothing happened." She shrugs and crosses her arms again.
"You sure? He didn't try to... do anything, did he?"
She shakes her head and smiles, "I'm good. I could really use a beer though. Seeing him kinda shook me into sobriety." Izzy awkwardly laughs but stops after Kie doesn't give her the same reaction.
"Izzy, he assaulted you and knowing him, he'd do it again. Why don't you just report it to the police—"
"No. I-I don't want to make this bigger Kie."
Kiara sighs and tilts her head to the side, "He committed a crime."
After collecting her thoughts for a second, Izzy realizes that that was true. But what should she even get out of that? People don't change easily. Especially Rafe.
