Delilah
"Delilah?" Riley asked. "Riley what do you want?" I ask as I open my locker. "Why do you think I want something?" She asked. "Do you want something?" I ask. "Yes," she says. "There we go," I say. "Okay so there's this guy, and I really like-" "I don't care," I cut her off slamming my locker shut and leaving.
"Talk to him," Maya told Riley. I automatically know the lesson was about talking so me knowing my dad he would do something completely unnecessary and take our stuff. So I go back and put my phone in my locker before class. "Hey what are you doing?" Chasity asked. "Figuring out the lesson," I say. "How?" Quan asked. "It's simple really, everything is about them so if you find out what's going on in their life..." I trail off. "You know the lesson," Quan finished.
Chasity joined me in leaving her phone and Quan stashed his in a hidden pocket within his backpack. We come in late as usual just as Cory explains the assignment. "And plot twist since I trust you not at all... hand over your phones," he says. "That means you guys to," Cory says. "Cory I don't have my phone," I say. "Mr. Carter?" He asked. "Don't have mine either," he lied. "Miss Reyes?" He asked. "Same," she said.
Maya walked over to us. "How do all of you leave your phones on a day when he takes them?" She asked. "Great minds think alike," Chasity said. The bell rang meaning we could leave school, but before we could get to our lockers Riley, Maya, Lucas, and Farkle blocked us. "Why didn't you have your phones?" Maya asked. "Because we knew the lesson," Quan said. "How?" Lucas asked. "You don't have to be a genius to know what or should I say who this class is about," I say. "Yea it's history," Maya said. "Wrong," Quan said. "It's about you, you four," Chasity said. "So if you know what's going on in your lives, mainly Riley's, we know what the lesson is about," I say walking off.
The group of four followed. "If that's true then how do you know, you barely know we exist?" Farkle asked. I roll my eyes. "You four are idiots," I tell them. "How?" Riley asked. "It's not just a random coincidence that my name's Delilah Matthews," I tell them. "My sister goes to school here? That's why you look familiar," Riley said.
When we get our stuff from our lockers I slip my phone into my backpack and we go on the subway. "You wanna go to Spades?" Riah asked. "Sure," I say. This month I decided I'd be coming home more often, but only because Auggie said he missed seeing me at dinner.
So I came home with my clothes from Spades. "You went shopping, why didn't you take me?" Riley asked. "So I could buy things like this," I say. I took out a red crop to that stopped a little bit under my breast. I then took out a short sleeve black crop with sewn in black and white sleeves to make it look layered. "Where's the color?" Riley asked. "These are colors," I say. "Does this mean I can have that shirt with that one finger like this?" Auggie asked sticking his middle finger out. I quickly pull his middle finger down. "That is not a good finger Auggie but this is," I tell him making a peace sign.
"Are you eating with us again?" Auggie asked. "Yes because I don't get paid until Saturday," I say. "You work?" Riley asked. "Modeling right?" Topanga asked. I nodded. At dinner we talk about our days.
"It was a good day, and then my friends treated me nicely, and then my teacher measured us, and then I'm growing, and then Jenny Lewis loves me... I think it's cause I'm growing," Auggie says. "It wasn't a good day, and then my friend pulled my hair out, and then my teacher took my phone away, and then my teacher was also my father," Riley said. I roll my eyes. "Delilah?" Auggie asked. "It was a boring day, and then I went to school, and then my teacher tried to take away my phone, and then I was smarter than him, and then I sat here," I say.
"Honey look at this as a beautiful opportunity to spend time with your family," Topanga said. "Hello Riley wanna hear about my day?" Auggie asked. "Goodbye Riley, I'm gonna stay at Tonio's so I don't have to hear about his day," I say leaving.
The next day
I'm sitting in class watching them drone about feelings and as soon as the bell rang I go home. I climb in through my window and get my outfit ready for Big D's party, aka the first party of the year. Of course before I can finish Riley comes in.
"Hi," she says. I ignore her and slip on the boots. "Delilah!!!" Riley yells. Shit she'll ruin everything if I don't answer. I roll my eyes as I force her all the way in and close the door. "What's going on?" She asked. "I'm just getting ready," I say. "For what?" She asked. "Do you live under a rock?" I ask. "No," she says. "The whole school is talking about it, even some of the 6th graders got in," I explain pulling on my boots and rushing to my lipstick.
"What are you talking about?" She asked. "Big D's party, the first party of the year," I say. Her face was still blank. "You should ask Maya, but trust me if you don't know then you've probably never been invited," I say. Just as I finished explaining things to Riley Chasity came in. "Why's Riley here?" Chasity asked. "It's fine," I say. "Can I come?" Riley asked. "Nope it's invite only and they actually check," Riah explains.
On that note I force Riley out of my room, lock my door and do finishing touches. When we get on the subway we get to Big D's house. "Delilah," his brother TJ greets. I hand him my invitation and walk in. "Chasity, Quan, Mariah, Tonio," TJ reads. Then I see some other people I know. "Hey isn't that Lucas?" Riah asked. I nodded. "Let's go talk to him," I say. The three of us walk over to them. "Hey cowboy, what brings you here?" I asked.
"Found an invite in my backpack when I got home and I ended up here," he said. "Yea that's how Big D does things, his party invites are always secretive and on the night of you found out if you got invited," Chasity says. "Hey when's Riley and Maya coming?" Lucas asked. "Riley never gets invited and Maya never comes because Riley doesn't get invited," I explain. "And Farkle wasn't invited either," Riah says.
"But hey you can hang with us, no one should have to hang alone at the first party of the year," Chasity offered. "Okay," he agreed. I smile as I lead him over to where the rest of the group is. "Boys this is Lucas, he's cool so he's can chill with us," I tell them. "Lucas that's Tonio and Quan," Riah introduced. "She's Mariah," Chasity said. "She's Chasity," I say. "And that's Delilah," Tonio says.
Mr. Texas was actually pretty cool for a cowboy. The party was amazing as usual and at 10:30 we leave and sleepover at Riah's like we do every year on this event. Even Lucas came and it was fun hanging out with him. It's really a shame he hangs out with my sister.
