'Birdie, wait!'
She stood there, facing away from him as he slowly approached her. Her mood suddenly changed, dark heavy clouds covering the once clear sky for her. She turned to him with no expression on her face for him to read. She wanted to look strong in front of him, letting him see he can't break her again with his insults like he did the last time. Whatever his reason was, she didn't want to see him.
'I am already over it if you wanna talk about it. I was pretty sensitive but I still don't think being with you is the best decision I make after this,' she said, the words were already arranged in her head as she had practised saying it when the time came. She just didn't expect it to be right here.
He looked hurt, but she was hurt too. She fought his gaze, hands on her waist with her hair was wildly untamed, her curls were messy but those were what attracted him the first time he saw her. He slowly shook his head, pulling out a paper bag.
'I came here to return your books, just in case you want them back..." there was a long pause, he pursed his lips into a thin line with his hand extended to give her the bag. She took it with both hands, hugging it against her chest as she feared her books will scatter around on the floor once the strings broke. She knew how her books weighed. She knew he had something more to say, so she just kept silence, giving him a chance to speak.
'And I'm sorry.. I'm so sorry for whatever I have said to you. I didn't mean it-
'You mean it.'
'No! Birdie, please... I know I fucked up but I am sorry.'
She stayed quiet again, letting him continue to talk. She was so good at faking the expression on her face. She looked cold and not welcoming, but deep inside God knew how much she wanted to give the douchebag in front of her a slap and a kiss. She was angry, but the love was still there.
'Words just slipped out of my mouth, and I can't control myself sometimes.. it's fine if you don't want me anymore but I'm always here and I'm sorry. Fuck, I'm so sorry, Birdie.' He approached her, tilting her head up with his index finger hooking under her chin. She bit her bottom lip, a habit she can't avoid doing when she was nervous. There was a massive swirling feeling in her stomach, cheeks began to heat up as her heart beat faster than before.
She can't deny how much she missed him and now he was in front of her, apologizing the way she wanted him. How easy her heart softened when he did this. She didn't want to give him the chance easily, wanting him to work on her a bit more.
It was a risky test, Birdie had known Devin as someone who didn't really give a shit but she wanted to see it. She wanted to see if she worth a try.
'I have to get inside,' she mumbled as she slowly stepped back, giving him a little nod before going inside. Good thing she didn't slam the door like the last time she did.
Peeking out the window through the curtain, Devin was still there with his hands ruffling his hair. She smiled a little, a little patch was attached to her broken fragile heart.
