Chapter One - Life Goes On

My eyelids flickered as I regained consciousness from the sweet slumber I craved far too often now that my life was back to 'normal'. The warmth on my cheeks soothed me a little, and I couldn't help but smile softly as I outstretched my arms and listened to the distant chirping of the birds' morning song. I'd slept so well last night I could barely remember actually falling asleep. That's the strange thing about returning from the Devildom, that place made me cherish any rest I am blessed with from now on.

Every night I used to close my eyes and prepare myself for the shrieking of Mammon's voice busting through the door to my room and forbidding me from sleeping just so he could talk my ear off for hours into the night, or for Levi to drag me to his room to pull an all-nighter playing a new game he'd had delivered from Akuzon that day, or a phone call from Beel telling me to come to the kitchen as there has been a "fridge-mergency" which basically translated to "I have eaten everything in the fridge and you need to help me find any food that has been hidden around this entire premises.", or a string of texts from Asmo trying to convince me to join him in his "ultra soft and luxurious Queen-sized bed that was clearly not made for just one person" which he ever so wistfully insists is the comfiest out of any bed in the House of Lamentation. I rarely got more than four hours sleep on a good night before being practically dragged out of bed by Lucifer, shooing me off to class like the strict middle-aged mother he so pretentiously acted like in front of his brothers. Don't get me wrong, he never actually physically prized me out of the cozy abode my room had become over the course of that year I spent at RAD, more so that his presence is so magnetic and forceful I found myself almost getting sucked out of bed and placed at the dining table to eat breakfast with one simple knock at my door followed by his deep, assertive voice calling "MC, are you awake?"

I digress. I find myself thinking about these things a lot, and still no matter how much I try and remind myself of the perks of being back home in the human world, the ache from the hole in my heart reminds me how much the Devildom really did become a home to me in my year as an exchange student.

I rubbed my eyes and peered around the room, rays of light spilt through the gaps in my blinds and poured strokes of sunrise onto the walls. Another thing I'm happy to experience again being back in the human world: daylight. I pushed my covers back and rolled out of bed, the D.D.D on my bedside table catching my eye as it lit up with a new chat on the screen.

Mammon: Hey MC, you done lazin' about yet?!

Sigh. Multiple thoughts sped through my brain as to what Mammon, the Avatar of Greed, could want at this hour. Hmm, perhaps something along the lines of: "Listen, I just need ya to lend me a few Grimm, not much, maybe 10,000 plus interest because of how amazing The Great Mammon is? I promise I'll pay ya back! Don't you worry! I've got some big business opportunities lined up!"
That cheeky bastard. No, he's alright really. He pushes this luck sometimes but Mammon has a heart of gold, despite it being full of greed. He's probably the most sensitive out of all the brothers.

I picked up my D.D.D and typed a quick response.

MC: Yes, Mammon. I'm awake. What do you need?

Before I could even put the bloody thing down it buzzes once again.

Mammon: Good. Levi wanted to ask you if you would video call later with him so he could show you his new stupid action figure thingy.

Mammon: That's the only reason why I texted ya.

Mammon: It's not like I wanted to talk to ya or anythin', human. Don't forget I've got things to be doin'!

I can picture the blush racing across his cheeks as he said that. My silly little dumbo also known by the name of Stupidmammon, he's never wanted to admit how close we really are. Almost inseparable since the day I set foot in the Devildom, not by choice at the beginning but we became fast friends. If I were to know better I'd say he had the tiniest of crushes on me, but a pact will do that to a demon.

I sauntered to the bathroom and began brushing my teeth when I hear a buzzing from the other room. It'll probably be my human phone ringing with one of my friends on the other ends of the line reminding me how late I am once again.
I finished up what I was doing and run to go grab my phone in time before I miss the call. I froze in my tracks as I stared at the flashing device, it's my D.D.D ringing. That's strange. Logically I shouldn't be so weary but it's not everyday that an unknown number calls from your Demon phone that you don't use except for talking to your Demon friends in their Demon realm. Wait, calm down. Just answer it. It's probably a misdial.

I try and steady my slightly shaky hand as I pick my D.D.D up and hit the green call button.

"Hello?" I said in a voice as confident as I could possibly muster up.

"Hello, I'm calling about the services you offer around the Devildom." A man's voice inquires smoothly on the other end.

See, a complete mistake. Although a little conspicuous, he seemed to have just called the wrong number.

"I'm sorry sir, I think you have the wrong numb-"

"MC?" ...

My heart dropped to the pit of my stomach.

"... Yes? Who is this?" I tried to sound as if I wasn't a highly anxious human still slightly scared of a lower level demon gobbling them up at any given opportunity. I didn't do a good job. I could hear the worry steeped in my words. I was racking my brains to try and find any familiarity in the man's voice on the other end of the phone, but I was sure I had never heard it before.

"Don't move, and don't hang up, or you die."
