My anticipation grew more and more as we began rolling into familiar parts of the Devildom. I mean, it's almost as if I wasn't here for some elaborate creepy scheme in which me and everyone I love was in grave danger, right? Haha. The chance would be a fine thing.
Mammon had been crazy on the phone, as expected. After the hollering about how he knew I'd come back for him and the excessive bragging about how he knew he was my favourite, we finally came up with the idea that my entrance would be a surprise for the others. He'd gather them into the entrance hall somehow and I'd walk through the door. I didn't have the heart to bring up to him that his brothers never listen to him, so I doubt they'd all round up in the hall without a valid reason to do so, but he sounded so excited for it, who am I to ruin his fun?
We were flying through the streets, going even faster than when Mammon drives us around in one of his much-too-expensive-definitely-put-him-in-debt sports cars. I rolled down the window a touch and breathed in the sickly sweet Devildom air for the first time in a long time. I mean, 'sickly sweet' may be an over exaggeration, but it's true that the way air feels in both the human world and the Devildom are vastly different. The Devildom feels more like you're breathing in silk, and always smells of various tempting and alluring scents depending on where you are. Human world air is poor compared to this, you can't guarantee that you won't be smelling dog poop around the next corner.
Suddenly, the car came to an abrupt halt, and the driver turned to face me for the first time in the hours we had been driving for.
"Get out here." He grumbled.
We were in a car park just behind the town. Perfect. I'll have some time to walk and clear my head before I have to see everyone and act like nothing is bothering me.
I slipped out of my seat and set foot on Devildom soil once again. My legs were unsteady and wobbled a little as I tried taking a few steps. The car sped off behind me without a second thought. I felt a little woozy and sick, it just dawned on me that this is really happening.
Pinch. Nope, not waking up from a dream.
I looked around for a second. It's quite quiet, given that it's evening time. I should probably start walking as quick as possible. I don't want to be on my own for too long. Lucifer always used to accompany me on my walks, saying it was dangerous for a human like me to be wandering the streets alone. I hugged myself inside my jacket, in which I was increasingly glad I'd thrown on before I left the house, and began on my way to the House of Lamentation.
I grinned to myself as I strolled down the middle of the path, shops paralleled either side of me. The memories I have here fill my heart with gratitude. A rich, smoky scent filled my nostrils and my stomach immediately growled at me. I still hadn't eaten. I'd know the smell of Hell's Kitchen's roasted shadow goose anywhere! I rushed inside and placed an order for takeout, enough for everyone. Well, maybe not enough to satisfy Beel, but it's the thought that counts.
"See, Z. You can't stop me from having my takeout tonight. If anything, this is ten times better than the plans I'd had before. So who's laughing now?" I chuckled to myself as I sat alone in the customer waiting area.
"How very interesting." A voice in my ear cackled back.
Oh, sh*t. I had no idea he was listening this entire time. Note to self: don't play your little imaginary argument scenarios out loud.
I'd better watch what I do more carefully. After all, I'm pretty sure he has eyes on me at all times since he knew what I was doing in my room, in the library, even in the car. And now he could hear me and talk to me whenever he wanted, too.
"I'd ask that you don't talk to me in that way, but surprisingly I find it quite amusing. However, you are not here to play games, MC. Don't go pushing your luck."
