My whole body was tense and still, I could feel my muscles ache and my breath hitch in the back of my throat as I did my best to not let the sob slip through my lips imagining what sort of impending doom awaited me.

"What do you want from me?" I whispered into the D.D.D, it was barely audible but the person on the other end seemed to have heard me perfectly.

"You are going to do everything I tell you to do from this point onward. I will not tolerate any protest, you will be under my full control. Is that clear?"

"Yes," I squeaked. The old me from a year ago would have turned around and said "Screw you, why would I listen to some stranger on the phone probably trying to prank me?", but I knew better than that now when it comes to dealing with these situations in the Devildom. I've come close to death far to many times at the hands of demons to take that tone with one whom I have no idea what could be capable of, not to mention he sounds so threatening even while maintaining such a smooth and calm verbiage. I will take the advice Lucifer has thrown at me in conjunction with a growl a handful of times, "Don't stick your nose where it does not belong, MC, and do not start a fight you will not be able to finish."

"Good girl." He mused. He was enjoying this. "Now, you must know what you are getting into. I will make no bounds about it, everybody you love is in danger. You are the only one who is responsible for keeping them safe. If you speak a word of this conversation to anyone, let's just say bad things will come of it." I felt faint. I sunk onto the bed, trying to fill my lungs with air at a steady enough pace as to not feel so dizzy. A short moment went by before I realize the voice on the other end of the line had fallen silent, but before long he snarled "Why is it that you have moved when I told you not to, dearest MC?"

This guy could see me?!

If my heart rate speeds up anymore I've no doubt I would implode.

"I- I'm sorry, sir. I just felt that I would faint if I kept standing-" Idiot, MC. Total idiot. Don't let him know how terrified you are. He seems to be getting off on this enough already.

"I see. Well, my sincerest apologies. If nothing I need you alive at least for what I am to set you out to do today." His voice sounded sincere and brisk, my eyes widened at the offer of an apology but even more so for the latter part of his sentence.

"Excuse me? Today?"

"Yes, silly. I wouldn't be calling now if I needed you next week, now would I?"

"Yes actually that would've been nice for some notice. I was going to be getting my freak on with a movie and takeout, later. Plans ruined." I mumbled quietly but sarcastically. I tensed up again realizing I'd probably made a grave mistake letting my mouth run like that. Another silence dawned for a brief few seconds before laughter erupted from the phone. Deep, melodic laughter that only a demon would have enough charm to pull off and make sound endearing.

I was lost as to what he found so hilarious, however I'm glad my backchat didn't attract a more severe response. Maybe I need to keep up a more snarky tone with him? An 'I'm not scared of you' type shtick.

"You speak to me like that again, and your tongue will be cut out and fed to the ravens, human." The mystery man chimed.

Okay, maybe not. "I'm sorry." I murmured.

"Such a strange one, you are. I can see why they  have such an interest in you."

They? "Oh, uhm, thank you?"

Another laugh.

"The small community library on Fifth Avenue behind the coffee shop."

"Huh?"

"Oh for the Devil's sake, go there! Go there now and await further instruction." He huffed. The phone crackled as if he was taking it away from his ear. "Oh, and you will refer to me as Z. Expect a call. Until later, MC." The phone clicked off and I let out a massive breath of air.

What just happened?
