Bright
My feet keep tapping against the tile floor in sync with the rhythm of the familiar song blaring on the stereo of the restaurant. The vibe and the music are the reasons why I enjoy eating here.
“I’ll have spicy shrimp soup” I say putting down the menu on the table.
“But that’s what you ordered yesterday” Pearl commented as she writes down my order.
“Because it tastes great, I’ll have that every meal and still crave for it” I say grinning.
“I’ll give you curry for saying that”
“Pearl, you’re spoiling him too much. What about me?” Beam says with puppy eyes and a pout.
“You’re not a regular here, so hurry and just order already.” Pearl replies dismissing him.
“You should treat me well, I’m a customer.”
I frequent in this restaurant so the owner, Pearl, knows me too well. I started coming here a week after the freshman orientation and ever since then I became a regular here.
Pearl is like an older sister to me. She and her husband often eats with me whenever I go here alone, they can’t have a baby because of some complications so that’s probably why they’re fond of me.
Pearl returns with our dishes and sits beside me.
“So, what are your plans for the coming semester? You’re third year now, so you have to cherish and enjoy your days before senior year or else you’ll regret it. Especially you” she says turning to me. “When are you going to date anyone?”
“I’ve been introducing him to girls but he keeps on—”
“Don’t. I don’t trust your taste with girls, Beam, so don’t introduce my Bright with anyone. I don’t want to see him get hurt.” Pearl interrupts Beam.
“You’re being too mean to me today.”
“Pearl has a point, though” I say.
“So, you’re a team now? Bright, how could you? I’m supposed to be your best friend.”
After dinner, I walk with Beam to the school dorm. We parted at the second floor because his room is in there while mine is at the third.
As I enter my room, I can hear noises coming from the room next to mine. I just hope that the person in there will not be too distracting when school starts. I’ve experienced it last year; the person next door plays heavy metal songs every night. It was hard trying to fall asleep or even study. Fortunately, other students at the dorm complained about it and the situation was dealt with immediately.
After taking a shower, I pick up my acoustic guitar and open the door to the balcony. The moon is in full bloom and the grasses on the school field adjacent to the dorm building looks lush with silver tint as it baths with the moonlight.
I sit on the cold floor of the balcony my legs crossed. I’m wearing shorts so the coldness penetrates to my bare skin. I place the guitar in my lap while holding the fretboard with my right hand.
I place my notebook on the floor and flip the pages. The page is full of scribbles and erasures; I’m probably the only one who can understand this.
This notebook is where I write my compositions; well, I can’t really call them compositions because I’ve never finished writing a single song. I always get stuck in the middle because I tend to lose the essence of what I’m writing or because I thought of a more interesting song to write.
