"How can you do this?" I stormed into President Paylor's office, shouting.
A few peacekeepers tried to keep me back, but President Paylor told them to let me go.
"I've been expecting you, Katniss. And I want to say I'm very, very sorry." she said with a small smile. "But the hunger of the people must be contained. I assume you know what type of hunger I am talking about."
"I do!" I spat out. "But I had kids! I thought it was safe! I thought -"
"Other people have kids too, Katniss" she said, somewhat tiredly.
"I am the Mockingjay! Can't you bend the rules just for me?" I practically screamed at her.
"I'm sorry, but that would seem unjust to other citizens of Panem" she said, avoiding eye contact.
"I was wrong. I thought you weren't like the others, but you are just like them. Just like...like...like Coin!" i flung myself at her, and this time she didn't stop the Peacekeepers from grabbing me back.
"I am truly sorry if one of your children get reaped, Katniss. But I can't bend the rules just to satisfy you. I apologise." she said, voice lowered, mixed with sadness and regret.
I stopped struggling with the Peacekeepers and tried to relax. She was right. None of this was really her fault. The people had needed to quench their hunger.
I sighed. "I'm sorry for attacking you, Paylor, but I thought I was going to have a more peaceful life, happy, with just my kids and with Peeta. I didn't really expected things to go...this far-" My voice cracked in the last few words.
President Paylor looked at me gravely. "I understand, Katniss. But I had to do it..."
"I guess I'll get ready for tomorrow now" I said, trying for a smile, but not quite managing to.
President Paylor was quiet for a moment as I walked out, then stopped me.
"Wait! I...wish luck to you and your kids. May the odds be in your favour-"
She said, her voice cracking a little. Just like mine.I nodded, accepting her words and chocked out a quiet "thank you", and was on my way out.
"Katniss? Are you...okay? What happened?" Peeta asked, his face filled with concern as he examined my slumped posture and red wrists where the Peacekeepers held me back.
"I'm...fine. Just tired. She wished me luck." I began to tell him about it as we walked home, his arm wrapped around my shoulder.
"I still can't believe it..." He shook his head in disbelief.
"We're going to be okay, Peeta." I said, more for his sake than mine.
Just as long as Willow or Thyme doesn't get reaped, I thought.
