The Afghan Hound is aloof and distinguished, with it's own streak of independence. This dog is not super affectionate, but more in line with how we think of cats. The Afghan Hound doesn't shed much, but requires quite a bit of grooming. He does make a good watch dog.
This dog is intelligent and pretty playful. He needs quite a bit of exercise to keep him from being destructive, so a large yard is ideal with maybe a good underground invisible fence system, as he is able to jump very high fences.
They were bred in Afghanistan to be hoarders and hunters. The Afghan Hound has exceptional vision that is far better than humans, and they have a very strong prey drive. For this reason, they do not do well with cats, and they need to be well trained to obey commands.
They also do well in really cold weather. In Afghanistan they excelled with speed and agility at chasing goats, ibex, gazelle, hares and even wolves and snow leopard.
They weigh 52 to 64 pounds, grow from 26 to 29 inches tall to the shoulder, and they can live to be 13 years old.
