The Akita dog breed is a powerful dog with an intimidating presence.
They were originally used for guarding royalty and nobility in fuedal Japan. They also hunted and tracked wild boar, black bear, and deer.
The Akita will not back down from challenges and won't frighten easily.
They are fearless and loyal dogs. Yet they are also affectionate, respectful, and amusing dogs, if properly trained and socialized.
The Akita is bound to shed and drool. So if you own one you'll be cleaning up extra.
They do okay with strangers but can be pretty stubborn at times, but those are good traits for a watch dog.
They will need a dog owner with experience if they are going to interact with other people or animals.
They are very active dog breed and will need a big open yard. They would like an owner who is home a lot and will be home a lot, because they might have severe anxiety.
The Akitas average weight is 70-130 pounds! and can reach up from 24-28 inches long at the shoulder. Their life expectancy is 10-12 years of age.
