The phone's frantic ringing managed to pull Joyce out of her trance. As soon as she reconnected with her surroundings, she let our a big sigh.
"Jesus, what sane person calls others in the middle of the damn night?"
She didn't move to pick up the phone, she figured that, whoever it was, they would eventually hang up and she could go back to her thoughts.
One time,
Two times,
Three times,
Silence.
"Thank God..", she muttered under her breath, and got off the couch, walking towards her bedroom. But then, the phone rang again.
Joyce grunted, whoever it was, they sure weren't giving up that easily.
She turned around, and slowly made her way to the phone. The frantic ringing made her head hurt. It felt as if the sound was getting louder with every ring, as if the phone was screaming at her. Pick me up! Pick me up!
She picked the phone up, and as soon as she heard the familiar click of the receiver, she knew she couldn't hung up.
"Hello, this is Joyce, who am I speaking to?" She hoped it was one of those sellers who always managed to find your number among thousands of other numbers, just to try and convince you to buy some stupid 'advanced technology' machine, which usually cost a fortune
But it wasn't.
"Oh thank God, Joyce, I thought you wouldn't pick up! It's Murray. We need to talk."
