That Saturday night, Brett and I rode with his childhood friend, Larry to a house party.
"I miss partying with you, man." Larry said, revving up the muffler on his truck.
"This guy used to party?" I asked with a laugh.
"Hard." Larry blurted.
"What changed?" I looked at Brett.
"Drunk driving accident," Brett sighed. "ruined the starting QB's career."
"Killing the mood!" Larry yelled in disgust.
"Well if Brett's gonna be a drag, I've got your back tonight!" I said, giving Larry a high five from the backseat.
"Hell yeah! Brett, she's a keeper!" Larry cheered.
"Oh, I know." Brett smiled, looking back at me.
At the party, it seemed like everyone knew Brett and Larry. The party was mostly white people.
"Here, babe." Brett handed a beer to me.
I quickly took a sip and then chugged it. "Another." I demanded.
"You okay?" Brett asked as he handed another to me.
"Just trying to get on my usual level." I said, popping the bottle open.
"Oh my gawd!" I heard a female voice yell above the music. "Brett? Is that you?"
I quickly threw back half of the bottle I had in my hand.
Up walked a girl, taller than me, with straight light brown hair and fair skin. She had the body like a female lacrosse player. She wore a low cut crew top, black leggings, and white high top converses.
"Brett!" She ran up and leaped into Brett, who was forced to catch her. "I've missed you so much!"
"Yeah, it's been a while." Brett said, letting her go and looking at her.
"More like a year!" The girl smiled. "So glad to see you!"
"Same," Brett said then turned to me. "Becca, this is Ally Jo, my girlfriend."
"Hi! I'm Brett's girlfriend, too." Becca smiled.
"Whoa." I said, taking a sip from my beer.
"Becca..." Brett began.
"You never broke up with me the proper way," She smiled, putting her arm around his neck. "so in my head, we're still together."
I felt my face burning red with anger. "Hey, Becca. Do you know where I can get some green?" I asked without showing emotions. "Seems like you and Brett here have a lot to catch up on."
"Oh yes!" Becca smiled towards Brett. "But weed is in the back yard actually. All the supplies are out there. Have fun!"
I eyed Brett and quickly walked away before Brett could grab me.
Outside, beyond the party was a field full of marijuana plants. Before I entered the crops, there was a knife and blunt wrappers in a mailbox. I grabbed the jackknife and made my way into the field.
What the hell had gone on in there? That girl, Becca, was way too forward! And what the hell is she talking about? Brett didn't break up with her properly? Why didn't I know any of this? Were all the thoughts running through my mind.
"Shit," I said as I began to cut a leaf. "I need this in my back yard." I cut another leaf, then turned around and ran straight into a dark figure.
