Diana was completely soaked, which was not a good thing. She could become sick if she kept the drenched dress on for too long. Swiping his long wet hair out of his face, Sam looked at Diana and saw she was so tired and he reached out and put his hand on her shoulder. She shuddered as she tried to warm herself.
"The rain came so suddenly." She shivered in reply to his earlier question.
"Welcome to England, that happens quite often here." He smiled as he took off his cloak and put it before the fire.
He went to the fire and added more logs, he didn't want her to catch her death of cold just because of unfortunate weather. Diana moved just a little closer to the hearth but decided sitting down beside it was better and would dry her faster. Sitting there she rubbed her hands together.
"You'll need to get the top dress off, it will not dry as fast as your undergarments." Sam sighed as he turned the opposite way of her. "I will not look."
He went to busy himself as Diana groaned at her situation. Why did this have to happen to her? Stripping down to just her underdress she began to warm herself again. Then suddenly another shits was put over her, looking up she saw Sam looking down at her.
"Can't hurt to have extra warmth." He said as he sat down on the fur rug right beside her.
He then took off his boots and placed them before the fire. Diana followed his lead and took off her shoes and too sat them before the fire. His shirt was large on her which did not shock her at all. She was of a smaller frame and stature. Pulling it close to her, she looked into the fire and waited to see what he would ask of her next.
"Do you really think me such a bad man?" Sam asked as he looked over at Diana.
She raised her eyebrows up in reply, asking if he were serious just by the look on her face.
"Now Diana, everyone here well mostly everyone is not loyal at all. Taking one to bed can be an advantage to almost anyone here. It is a way to climb the ranks." Sam tried to explain himself.
"You hardly knew the woman! How in the world can comes one just screw anyone here? It's suppose to have meaning, a true purpose not something to just pass the time with!" Diana said passionately.
"Procreation as well, I understand you are not used to these customs but that is the way things are here." Sam sighed in defeat. "It's not as though anyone likes the way things are, though if we go against the grain out heads will be on spikes at traitors bridge."
Diana sighed, she knew that it wasn't all his fault. He didn't make the rules in this time, he didn't give people better positions by sleeping with them, that she knew of, but it still felt so wrong to Diana. Granted her mother had three children...by three separate men...that didn't mean she would have to follow in her mothers shadow...would it?
"Our kiss must look real." Sam said as he took Diana's hand. "We want the king to look away from you until the trial and this will assist with that."
"What are you suggesting Lord Barsham?" Diana asked skeptical of his intentions.
"Perhaps you could attempt to kiss me without looking as though you want to run for the hills?" He suggested and Diana looked him over.
Once again his shirt was open, she couldn't help but look down and she could see he was in good shape for someone from this time. Suddenly his torso moved towards her, she looked up and saw Sam was reaching out and gently touching her cheek. She could feel a strange feeling in her stomach though the feeling wasn't bad at all. She watched as he leaned in and while supporting her hand with the hand he had on her cheek, he kissed her. She felt herself lean into the kiss, and a shiver went through her body, one she had felt with Simon. In confused her for a moment but she closed her eyes and leans into him.
Laying back on the rug, Diana was in the embrace of Sam and though she had stopped the situation from going any further she felt like she really needed to talk to her mother, maybe she could give her some insight on this. They both were looking at the ceiling of the room as she fireplace crackled beside them.
"I never thought I would offer to marry someone." Sam said out of the blue.
Diana looked over to Sam surprised.
"What do you mean?"
"I always thought it would be by force, I never wanted to get married and then have to be stuck with someone until they decided they had had enough of me." He shrugged not really sure why he was opening up to her.
"What if one day I were gone? Would you remarry then?" Diana asked as she looked at him.
"Nah, no point. I'd just live out the rest of my days doing the hunt and making sure that I don't lose my head either." He replied as he looked over at her. "Are you talking about running away with Simon?"
No, that wasn't what she was talking about. In truth she was talking about the end of her mission but she couldn't tell him that, at least she couldn't tell him yet. Shaking her head, she saw Sam relaxed just for a moment.
"Good, I'd hate to think what would happen if you two ran off." Sam pulled her closer to him.
Her heard was now resting on his chest and he took comfort in the heat of her embrace. He closed he eyes and Diana could hear his heart rate returning to normal. His breathing was steady.
"Once I fall asleep you can go, just let me enjoy the silence with you for a moment." He said with his eyes still closed at his arm draped around her.
Diana chuckled and waited for about an hour before she removed herself. She didn't go back to her room though, instead she arrived back at HQ to see her mother sitting in a chair waiting for her. Mother and daughter must think a lot alike since Abigail was waiting for her daughter.
"You wanted to talk to me?" Abigail asked and pointed to the seat beside her.
"Was it hard for you? When you fell in love did it ever confuse you?" Diana asked her mother.
Abigail sighed and sat back, this was not a conversation she had been looking forward to having with her daughter.
"Yes, it was hard. The first man I fell in love with on a mission was named Adam. He was from the time of the American Revolution. He was smart, caring and the first time I met him I had to sew him up from a bullet wound. I loved him and he gave me your brother, a part of my hear will always belong to him. Now when I went to the witch trials that was truly hard since I tried to distance myself from any man and yet I fell for two of them, John and the town doctor. Your father, he saved me. He took care of me and helped nurse me back to health with the help of your aunt. We grew close and love took over. What I guess I am trying to say is yes it was hard, it was certainly confusing and to be honest I wouldn't change a thing." Abigail answered in all honesty with her daughter. "Catching feelings for the Lord Barsham guy now?"
Diana wasn't sure, at first she was loathed at the sight of him. Now he had saved her twice though also brought her into a marriage deal. He just seemed to confuse her more than anything whereas with Simon it was easy. She knew there were feelings there and she knew she had given her first time to him so how could she possibly feel anything for anyone else.
"There can be more than one love in your heart my child. Just pick wisely, the future is unknown, make sure they can handle the truth." Abigail said as she looked to her daughters watch that was flashing. "Times up, back to your mission kiddo."
And with that, Diana was back in Lord Barsham's room. He was still asleep on the rug before the fireplace. Did she really have feelings for someone like him?
