  I N T H E P A S T

Little Evie sat down with her best friends, Ramona Sterling, Lily Lopez, and Dana James at the lunch table.

They had been friends with the brothers for a couple weeks and everyone had been getting along great. Except for Evie.

Evelyn seemed to have a big problem with Chris. She didn't know why. Something about his face just annoyed her.

Chris, Rueben, Augie and Rio joined the girls at the table. Chris sat next to Evelyn and she recoiled in disgust. She took her peanut butter and jelly sandwich off the table and scooted closer to her sister.

Chris frowned and looked to her.

"Hi Evie."

"Hi parasite." She responded.

"Evie. That's not nice." Her older sister scolded.

"It's not my fault he's a parasite who's come to infect us with cooties." Evie whined.

Chris got a flash a hurt in his eyes as he got up and walked away. Dana smacked her sister in the back of the head and made Evie feel bad. But she persisted with her actions.

In class if he needed a pencil or some paper, Evelyn turned her head the other way. If he fell at recess and hurt himself, Evelyn walked away as if nothing had happened.

She was being a bully and even though he didn't show it, the way she acted really hurt Chris' feelings. One day she almost got in trouble for it. Getting called up to the office and hearing her classmates go 'oooooh' was humiliating.

"Miss James, please have a seat." The principle told her.

Next to the empty seat she saw Chris sitting down looking guilty. She sat down shaking with fear.

"There has been some talk of bullying? Care to explain Miss James?" The principle asked.

Evelyn wiped her head of sweat and tried not to cry. Chris noticed her glazed over eyes and she tried to get out a sentence.

"It was me miss. I made up a bunch of rumors to get Evelyn in trouble." He spoke up.

"And why would you do that?"

"I thought it would be funny to my brothers." He lied.

Evelyn looked to Chris with a face of shock. He was covering for her? Why? All she had done was be mean to him.

"Bullying or making up rumors about bullying is never cool Mr Wood." The principle scolded.

"I know Miss Hart, I'm sorry." He said looking down.

"Don't apologize to me, apologize to Miss James."

He looked over to her and rubbed his hands nervously.

"I'm sorry Evie."

She cleared her throat, "It's—it's okay. No hard feelings."

"You two are dismissed as long as this foolish behavior stops."

"Yes Principle Hart." They both said walking out.

As Evelyn tried to talk to Chris, he ran away to the bathroom. Evie looked after him and wondered why he would do such a thing to such a terrible friend.

At lunch, Evie got her sandwich and grabbed Chris' hand. She dragged him to a tree despite his protests.

"What do you want Evie? I'm not in the mood for you right now."

"Sit." She told him.

He gave her a skeptical look.

"Please?" She tried asking nicely.

He sighed and sat down under the shaded tree. He looked at all the kids playing on the field and wished to be anywhere but here.

Evie opened up her bag and offered him a fruit snack.

"Why? What's this?" He asked scared.

"It's a present. I'm sorry for being mean to you. You're not a parasite. You're actually a really good friend." She said quickly as she was embarrassed to be doing this.

"Oh. Well thank you,"

"I took out all the grape since I don't like grape. So I hope you don't like grape that much."

"Well actually all I like is grape." He said.

"What?" She said shocked as she looked in her bag for more.

"I was just kidding. I don't really like grape either."

"Oh." She smiled. He just joked with her. Like a friend.

"Thank you for getting in trouble for me. You didn't have to do that."

"No problem. Thanks for the fruit snacks. You didn't have to do that."

She smiled genuinely at him. "No problem."
