7. Lay Me Down

•••

"I said it's hot outside let me go swimming in your eyes
Weve been running for a while
Why don't you lay down and make me smile
I could never ask for nothing better than this
It's just tequila and the beach that's why it's salty when we kiss"

"You know what I love about smoke?" Val asked, watching the cloudy rings billow from her mouth, floating up toward the sky.

JJ only grunted in question, taking a deep hit from the joint that she passed to him.

"It only rises." She continued, her voice sounding a million miles away to even herself at this point. "That shit's got no where to go but up."

JJ's eyes widened as he turned his whole body to look at her. "That was fucking poetic. Like for real."

"Don't sound so surprised." She scoffed lazily, taking another drag and holding it in until her lungs burned, then letting the smoke trail out slowly through her nostrils. "I can be fucking poetic when I want to be."

JJ nodded in agreement, "Yeah. I like that shit. 'Smoke only rises'. It's like a metaphor, you know? Like if we were the smoke-"

"J?" Valerie shushed, pressing a finger to his lips. "You don't need to explain the metaphor."

"Right." He nodded enthusiastically, taking one last hit before flicking the roach out into the water.

It was somewhere around 2am. The two teenagers were so fucking high and drunk that they had both been lying on the dock at The Chateau for hours.

"Why is it so quiet?" JJ whispered loudly.

"Because you stopped running your mouth for .5 seconds." Valerie sighed. When she closed her eyes, she could swear the dock itself was swaying beneath her.

"Well I don't like it, alright?" JJ complained, pulling out his phone and pouting when he realized the battery was dead. "I'm starting to hear my thoughts and shit."

"I got you." Valerie assured him, scrolling to her Smoking Playlist on Spotify.

JJ hummed in satisfaction as the sounds of the  Dirty Heads started drifting from the Bluetooth speaker.

He pushed himself up on his elbows, reaching for the tequila bottle and taking a long pull before collapsing back, waving his finger in the air slowly to the beat.

"Well this is how it starts,
Two lovers in the dark,
On the run from the one that they call 'Sheriff Spark'.
Six guns by their side
And bullets round their waist.
Two shots to the sky signals signs for the chase."

Valerie began singing along, JJ drumming his hands on the dock to accompany her.

"The safe was nearly empty and they were nearly free,
But they were seen by the good eye
Of the mean billy green.
And he screamed at the top of his lungs
"They're on the run!""

"It's the two wild siders,
Grab your holster and your guns!" JJ's voice joined in, aiming a finger gun at her and pretending to shoot.
