The female flying snake, Slynella, who lives her mate, Mist, (also known as Hortense, the heroic owl who rescued owl eggs from at St. Aggies Academy for Orphaned Owls) and Zan and Streak the eagles, has a name that sounds similar to the name of a Hogwarts house from the Harry Potter world, Slytherin. Coincidentally, the animal of this house is a snake! However, this probably isn't a reference to Slytherin since it is unlikely that Kathryn Lasky has read the HP series and Slynella is actually a benevolent snake, and Slytherin people are not known for being friendly!
