The Doctor stumbled into the flat. “Wow Yaz! That was so fun!” she pranced in and waved the rainbow flags. “It was, but very tiring”. Yaz sat down at the table, it was quite late already but the Doctor was still prancing around, her colourful dress swishing everywhere. “Should we go to bed Doc? it’s been a long day” Yaz asked. “Aww, Yaz, I want to do things still" the Doc complained. “Okay, tomorrow we can do something fun. I’ll think of something, but promise that you’ll go to sleep” Yaz explained. The Doc obediently followed Yaz and they got dressed into their pyjamas. They lay in their beds, trying to sleep but as always the Doctor had started blabbering. “Hey, Yaz, psst, what are we going to do tomorrow?” she whispered by Yaz’s ear. “I said I’d tell you after you sleep” Yaz murmured under her duvet. “You didn’t specify how long I should sleep” the Doc replied cleverly. “Until tomorrow. Goodnight” Yaz said as calmly as she could. In the early hours of the morning, the Doctor was up as always. “Morning Yaz...” she whispered excitedly. Yaz turned around to face the Doctor whose smile was extremely wide. “So, what are we doing?” asked the Doctor. “...It’s 6 o’clock in the morning.” stated Yaz, and collapsing back in bed.
“I know, but it’s tomorrow!” the Doctor explained
“Yes, but.....”
“Y o u  p r o m i s e d  Y a z”
“Let’s just have breakfast”
The Doctor leaped into the kitchen and immediately went fishing for spoons for her cereal. Yaz tiredly poured herself some too. “How about, Doc, we go hiking?” she asked.
“Hiking! Yeah!”.
“Do you even know what hiking is?”
“Hi-king?......."
“Walking, but up in the woods. Long walks”
“Ooh, walking is fun!”
“It’ll be an adventure. But don’t complain if you’re tired”
“I won’t!”
Yaz and the Doctor ate their cereals. The Doc slurped hers up, she was so excited that she got milk all over the table and around her mouth. “Oh Doc, if only you knew how funny you look!” Yaz laughed. “Haha! Am I funny?” the Doctor joined in too. “Need help cleaning up?” Yaz asked. She gave some napkins to the Doctor, who crumpled them up and dabbed it around her face. Yaz got dressed, and started to pack two bags. She grabbed water bottles and filled them up. “What are you girls doing today? Resting after that parade?” Yaz’s dad asked, walking into the kitchen. “We’re going hiking!” Yaz shouted from her room, opening the bags and carrying them to the kitchen. “In the forest” she continued, “Where’s the Doc?”. She looked by the door where the Doctor was putting on her coat and boots. “I’m ready!” she announced, and marched to the door. “Hang on! It’s only 7:30! We’ll leave in a few hours” explained Yaz. The Doctor groaned and went to sit down. “I’ll pack a lunch though, how about some c-“. “Yes” the Doc replied.
“I didn’t even fi-“.
“Custard creams”
Yaz shrugged to her dad and packed the custard creams, as well as a torch and portable charger. It turned 8am, and Yaz’s mother and sister were awake. “Morning Yaz’s mum and Sonya” the Doctor muttered, her head on the table playing with a spoon. “I’m bored, Yaz won’t let me out yet”. Yaz ruffled her hair “Don’t worry, we’ll go soon, I’m still making us food” she said. She got some packs of crisps and put them into the Doctor’s blue backpack, and put some sandwiches in her own red one. “I’ve charged my phone, what else do we need?” Yaz asked herself. “We’re rea-“ the Doc began. “Oh yes, we might need some first aid, I’ll get some plasters and tissues”, she went to fetch them. The Doc sighed and buried her head in her arms. It turned 10 o’clock and Yaz has run around packing some other things into their bags. “Are..we finally ready?” the Doc asked, looking like she was ready to sleep. “Yes, I think we are!” Yaz finally said, she started to put her boots on. The Doc perked up and skipped to the door, slinging her bag over her back like a child going to school. “See you girls later! Let us know if you need collecting!” Yaz’s father said. The Doctor ran down the stairs and out of the block. Her hair bounced with every step she made. When they reached the forest entrance, they saw a couple with their dog. The Doctor crouched down and waved at it. The couple walked their dog over to her, so she could pet it. Yaz also came down “Hello, you and your friend seem to like dogs” the man said. “Best friends actually” the Doctor corrected him. After they walked away with the dog, Yaz and the Doctor walked through the empty forest, with only the leaves in the wind and sticks crunching under their boots making noise. “Am I really your best friend Doc?” Yaz questioned, breaking the silence. “Of course! You buy me custard creams!” the Doc smiled. Yaz looked a little disappointed. “I’m joking! Best best best best best friends!” the Doc chirped. She started to skip alongside. “We should go this way, otherwise the forest will end, we want to go on a long walk” Yaz stated, guiding them through.
They walked upon a bird spotting hut, so they decided to take a break there. “Wow, it’s very creamy and dark” the Doctor stated. She looked out through the little gaps in the wall where you could look at birds. “Yaz, where are the birds?” she asked. “They’ll come, if we’re quiet” she replied. They sat down and had some crisps, the Doctor meanwhile would drop small crumbs outside of the hut as she ate. She stopped munching when she heard a bird tweeting. She spotted it between the trees. “Yaz, bird!” she whispered. Yaz looked outside, and tried to share the Doctor’s excitement for a regular blackbird. “Should we carry on? There’s a small river nearby I think” Yaz said, trying to take the Doc’s attention off the bird.
After some more walking, they saw a small muddy ditch, with murky water and green plants, which continued for what seemed to be out of the forest. “This should be the river” said Yaz, she looked into the water, where there were small green plants. Then she heard splashing... “Oh come on Doc! Did you have to stand in the water?” she went over to see the Doctor was standing in the muddy water, luckily it wasn’t too deep. “Awww, it’s fun Yaz!” she declared, Yaz grabbed her hand and pulled her out. “I know, but it’s hiking, not swimming!” Yaz laughed.
The Doctor, despite having her boots soaked, skipped ahead, enjoying the squelching noises. “Yaz, what if we find a deer?” she asked. “I’m pretty sure, they would run away, they could hear us coming from ages away” Yaz said. “Oh” the Doc replied and stopped. “Then what’s that?” she said again, and pointed to a little deer in the distance. Yaz stopped and also taken a look, “...Well, that’s a deer” she said. It was far away but it could hear them as the Doctor tried to walk towards it. Yaz pulled her back. They continued deeper into the forest, this time, it was a bit darker, the top of the trees created a roof above their heads, and blew in the wind. “How about we stop for food? It will give us a chance to stay out of this wind”. Yaz and the Doc stopped by the side, and had their sandwiches. The Doctor picked up some dirty stones and put them in her pocket. She flipped over a rock, and a worm bounced around in the soil. “Woah, Yaz, worm” she put her head down and watched it wriggle around.
Then, she felt a drop of water hit her nose.
“I think it’s-“
“Raining...”
The girls got up and pulled on their hoods. Yaz calmly looked to find some shelter nearby whilst the Doc ran around maniacally. “Let’s go up this hill, it should be leading us home, I don’t remember the path back the other way” Yaz shouted. The rain became more intense, and puddles started to form in the ground was a bit deeper. They started the climb up the hill, shouting between each other as the rain became louder. The hill became less steep and was easier to climb on as there were less leaves. The Doc climbed behind Yaz, who was trying to get to the top as soon as possible. She looked behind her to see how the Doc was doing, then, she tripped up on a stone and slid down a bit. “Yaz!” the Doctor shouted she ran over, catching her breath. Yaz turned herself over and pushed against the ground to get up, but she couldn’t. “Do you need help? Are you ok?” the Doctor blabbered. She stuck out her hand to Yaz, who grabbed it and pulled herself onto one leg. She tried to step down on her right foot and couldn’t balance herself. “Oh no! You’ve hurt yourself!” the Doctor shouted, she pulled Yaz’s arm over her shoulder and pulled her to the side. They collapsed down onto the ground under a tree, where the rain was quieter. The Doc tried to open her bag with the first aid kit inside, her hands were wet and numb and slipped off the zip, before she finally pulled it off. She handed Yaz some tissues. She wiped her hands, which were stinging from the fall. “Thank you. How are we going to get home?” Yaz said. “I don’t know Yaz. I’m scared” the Doc said, she crawled over to Yaz and sat next to her. The sky was becoming darker and there was some thunder. The Doctor put her arms into her sleeves. Yaz could see her shaking and put her arm around her. “Don’t worry. We need to find where we are” Yaz said, “then we can call for someone to pick us up”. The Doctor got up, “Stay there Yaz, I’m going to go up the rest of the hill” she ran up the hill skilfully. After a minute she cane dashing down again. “There’s more forest, but I can see a pathway” she said.
“That must be the way out” Yaz told her, “we should go there”.
“But you can’t walk”
“It’s ok. I’ll try”
The Doctor helped Yaz up and tried to pick her up, but Yaz settled for using the trees to pull her up the hill. “I should call my dad” Yaz said, they sat down by another tree. “Oh no! No signal!”. Yaz decided that she’d have to use her data to send a message this time. The storm became worse, and the wind was louder. The Doc shivered and nestled down by Yaz. “Yaz, I want to go home, I’m scared. It’s dark” she cried. “I’m writing to my dad, don’t be scared”. Yaz smiled to the Doctor to reassure her.” She tried to type as well as she could with the rain dampening the screen. Some more thunder rumbled and Yaz felt the Doctor’s grip on her arm get tighter. It was like a block of ice touched her. A huge gust of wind came, and the Doctor’s cold red hand searched around for Yaz’s, and pulled it closer. “I’ve sent a message, it’ll all be over. Dad knows where we are”. Yaz put her arm around the Doctor and felt her shaking. “I...don’t want to g-go hiking any..more” the Doc stammered and moved closer towards Yaz. “You can’t get any closer to me! You’re already extremely close” Yaz laughed. There was some lightning now. “Please don’t leave me Yaz, please don’t go” the Doctor whispered and clutched Yaz tighter. “I won’t leave you. We’ll be in the warmth soon” Yaz replied. After a few minutes, Yaz got a reply from her dad. The Doctor peeked over to see the message too. “He’s nearly here. Let’s walk over to the pathway”. They pulled themselves up slowly. Soon, they heard what sounded like Yaz’s dad shout. The Doctor looked up from under her hood, and waved towards him. They shouted as loud as they could. “Are you..okay? Oh no, you look so cold, I’ll help you” he said, he picked up Yaz gently with the Doctor scurrying around at the back. “Don’t worry, the car is right here” Yaz’s dad said, and the Doctor opened the door so Yaz could sit down. The door shut, and immediately they could relax, the Doctor lay her head down onto the window and looked out at the raindrops falling and bundled herself up. “We’re safe now don’t worry” Yaz said. The Doctor smiled and inched her way towards Yaz and squeezed her hand. “I felt safe with you anyway” she said, and slowly closed her eyes.
