Chapter 4: "Through Memory Lane"

"Happier" By Marshmello & Bastille

It was a Thursday night and we had invited over the Ramirezs over for dinner like how we said we would the day we met them. I figured it was the respectable thing to do and so did Gunnar. I'm sure he really wanted to thank Cynthia for giving him a couple first job opportunities for his new company: "Gunnar's Help." We were still deciding on the name because this one kind of sounded like he was a hitman but nonetheless, he was getting the website set up for it now.

"Could you please pass the ravioli?" Maria had stuck her little tiny frail arm over the dining room table. "Oh! I totally got you!" Nico didn't even waste a millisecond completely standing up and reach over the table to hand it to this pretty girl. The funniest part was he wasn't even close to the ravioli. Maria then put some on her plate as did her mother. "Thank you so much for all the help you've given me, Cynthia." "Oh no it's my pleasure. I really think the houses look a lot better now. I'll let you know if we get any interested clients on the houses." She then took a bite of the ravioli. "Ooo, this ravioli is delightful!" Cynthia exclaimed.

"Yeah, it's really good. Who made it?" Maria asked while wiping her lips with a napkin. Nico shot his hand up high as fast as he could. "I did!" Nico was clearly just busting his ass for Maria. "What's the sauce on it?" "It's a little bit of olive oil, oregano, vinegar and butter." "It's delicious!" Maria exclaimed as she took another bite and you could tell Nico was enthralled by this. He honestly felt like he had won. Me on the other hand, I was just here trying to do the right thing and improve my people skills. And Robbie was just happy to eat as much pasta as he could.

"So how long have you guys lived here?" Maria had asked. Gunnar almost choked on his food. Nico had set down his napkin. Something that they had said had sparked a little bit of memories that we had liked to avoid. Cynthia had just given her the evil eye as if she had said something wrong. That was a touchy subject for us. Our past. I mean I'm sure they would have noticed by now that our parents are not in our lives anymore. That and I had spoken about this on interviews and talk shows I mean people were curious, but it was a sad story to tell. And none of us liked going through memory lane because of it. "Maria." Her mother let out. "Oh no it's ok." Nico stepped in. "Yeah no, um, we've lived here our entire lives actually." Gunnar let out an uncomfortable chuckle. "All of us haven't lived anywhere else. Our parents had bought it when they first got married and had all of us. But that was a long time ago. Now it's just us."

Maria just stared at her mother like she was afraid she'd say something inconsiderate again. Cynthia spoke for her. "Well, I'm sure with this movie and all of you still working you have more than enough now. Why are all of you still here?" She joked. And Gunnar, Nico and I all chuckled as we all looked at each other but I couldn't help but notice all the truth in what Cynthia just said. And it was written on all of our faces. Why were we still here? This place was filled with such bad memories. Mom dying, dad running off with a younger woman, struggling to make payments every month, the loneliness without the both of them. Why were we still here? We had enough money a long time ago to go someplace else even if it was just some cheap rinky dink apartment in Glendale. I literally had no idea. "I guess it's just this place is home you know? We've always been here. It's always felt like home." Gunnar spoke likes his words were cutting into his throat.

None of us liked revisiting the past. Yet the past just kept popping the fuck up in every way possible. It wasn't long until I was at another place where I felt like I was around ghosts again. It was at Amber, Violet, Richard and I's double date. We just decided to go to Delicious Café, that little place Amber and I used to go to get lunch for when we'd sit at Roselake with each other. I guess we both figured it would be easy to fit this date in within our busy schedules and just meet up down the street. It was weird being back there. It just felt so off just standing out front waiting for everyone to get there. I was just in some blue jeans, red vans, and a cut out black t-shirt that was actually part of my character's wardrobe. Violet looked so sexy when she walked up. She was in beige construction work boots, black ripped jeans and a Milwuakee Bucks basketball green jersey that showed off her muscular toned arms. She loved sports so much. Primarily basketball.
