Cecil yawned, and got up. It was his anniversary with Carlos, and his day off, meaning he had Carlos to himself.
He opened his wardrobe, admiring Carlos' extensive collection of lab-coats, and pulled on some pants. His tentacles emerged and stretched, before retracting. Still shirtless, Cecil yawned, and walked into the kitchen. Carlos (Oh perfectly beautiful Carlos) Was frying some eggs. 'Good morning hon,' Carlos said without turning around. He flipped the egg. Or, he tried to, but Cecil caught it before it hit the pan. It was a game they had been playing for years.
'Cecil, that's hot- hey, are those my pants!?' Carlos said, turning.'Yup' Cecil said, his mouth full.
'Whatever. Guess I'm wearing purple today.'
'Guess so. Where are we going out tonight?'
'Oh, Cecil, I promised my parents that they could meet you tonight.'
'What? on our anniversary?' Cecil's third eye blinked (or winked?). It wasn't that he didn't want to meet Carlos' parents, he had just been looking forward to their anniversary. He was hurt, but he tried not to show it. 'Ok! What are your parents like?' He asked, kissing Carlos on the cheek. 'They-' Carlos hesitated, not quite looking Cecil in the eyes. (This wasn't unusual, as Cecil had three, but still...) 'They're nice.' Cecil immediately got the feeling Carlos was keeping something from him. He decided not to press it, though. 'How are they even going to get to Night Vale?'
'They'll get lost,' Carlos said. (Trust me, it's the only way for an outsider to really get to Night Vale)
'Aaah.'

Cecil didn't know what he had been worried about. Carlos's parents were very... amiable! Yes, amiable.
Or so he thought.
'It was nice meeting your friend, Carlos. But when can we meet her?' Carlos' mother said. she was an elderly woman, and she looked nothing like Carlos. Cecil liked her anyway, but he didn't understand what she meant.
Carlos stood, suddenly. Cecil knew immediately something was wrong. 'Sorry mom, dad, but can Cecil and I have a moment?' Carlos said.
'Sure honey, just don't be too long.'Carlos pulled a very confused Cecil out of the dining room and into the master bedroom.
'Carlos, wha-'
'Listen Cecil, where... where I come from, not many men... like other men.'
'Yes, I know,' said Cecil impatiently. 'But what...'
'I haven't told them I'm queer, Cecil. They don't know you're my husband.'
'So tell them - what's the big deal?'
'Cecil, I don't know how they'll react. They're old people, with old customs.'
'I mean, if you don't want to, I can.'
'No, you're right I'm being silly. I can do this.' Carlos muttered, reaching up to swipe a stray hair off his forehead.***
'Mom, Dad, I want to tell you something.'
'Shoot,' Carlos' Dad said, accompanied by an encouraging nod from his mother.
Carlos took a deep breath.
'Cecil is my husband.'
Carlos' mother dropped her glass of wine. As if in slow motion, it fell to the ground, and shattered, red going everywhere. Despite himself, Carlos felt a twinge of regret. It was good wine, and a good carpet.
Carlos' father stood up. He was a tall man, and he looked slightly crazed. And, Carlos suspected, drunk.
'Carlos, what the FUCK!' he yelled, raising his right hand. Carlos suddenly felt scared. Would his own father hit him?He didn't find out.
A familiar purple tentacle snaked around his father's wrist, and held it there. Cecil's normally purple eyes were blazing white, his tattoos moving faster than ever.
'Don't. Touch. Him.'
Cecil threw Carlos's father against the wall. Slightly dazed, Carlos' father looked at his hand, as if unbelieving that he would ever do such a thing. Shaking his head, he took a nasty looking revolver out of his jacket and pointed it at Cecil, his hands shaking. 'I- I'll call the police!' Carlos' mother said, cowering behind her armed husband. Cecil roared with laughter, smacking the revolver out of Carlos' fathers hands. 'Go ahead! I know the Sherrif, he's a great guy!'
The couple looked at each other, and scrambled for the door.As soon as they were out, Cecil's tentacles retracted and his eyes dimmed back to their familiar purple. Exhausted, he collapsed into Carlos. 'Well that was a nightmare,' he said as Carlos held him. In response, Carlos just kissed him. Their tongues intertwined, and Carlos felt at ease for the first time in hours.
(End!)
