"It's too early, I wanna go back to sleep," You say while yawning. You slowly walk over to the door of your small cottage. You have always been very connected to the truffula trees, so living amongst them wasn't a problem for you.
After gathering yourself together, you open the creaky door, heading off to the river by your house. It was a small stream that nobody really visited, but you have always loved it.
While walking alongside the river, you noticed something, or rather, someone, walking towards you. You ran over to a nearby tree to try to figure out what was up ahead. People rarely visited the forest, so this was odd.
"Stop! Leave my tent alone!" A tall man yelled at a smaller orange creature standing beside him.
"The Lorax? Why would he be here? He hasn't been here since- never mind." You whispered to yourself as you shuddered off the memory.
"Who's there?" The tall man called out, getting a slight glimpse of you.
You hid behind one of the truffula trees and closed your eyes hoping to not be seen again.
"I can see you, y'know." The Onceler said. You hadn't realized that he was standing right next to you, despite the tree being way smaller than you.
"Oh, hi, I'm- uh, I'm (Y/n)" You replied, feeling very embarrassed.
"I'm Once. Do you live out here?" He asked, cocking his head to the side slightly.
All of a sudden, an older woman walks up to the two, a smug look on her face.
"Not anymore, they don't." She said, holding up an expired, unpaid contract.
"What? You told me I still had a month to pay off the land!" (Y/n) yelled, anger lacing their voice.
"Well, we had to... speed up the process. Your cottage is now being demolished because you failed to pay your dues. You need to take your belongings, and vacate your area." She replied smugly.
(Y/n) sat on the ground, trying to comprehend the odd series of events that had occurred.
"Hey, If you need a place to stay, you can stay with me."
"I literally just met you two seconds ago, the fuck?"
