A journal entry authored by Dara, keeper of the great library.
once upon a time mages were the protectors of the nation.
Riders dominated the skies and the earth.
Mages were revered, loved and respected.
But it all changed when the new king was crowned. The king was the first in many years to be giftless. He feared mages and magick itself. Influenced by corrupted advisors, he decided to end the reign of gifted people.
After the cowardly king slaughtered the riders through trickery and declared war on the rest of the gifted, few people came to the library. In times of war, knowledge is forgotten and in its place foolishness takes root in the persons being. As the mages arrogantly prepared for war, the king emerged with machines made from iron and bone; machines that could match the power of the mages. For three years, the war went on with the mages allowed fear to corrupt their minds. They strayed further and further away from the path as they increasingly experimented with magick of blood and gore, magick of the darkest night. Shamefully, they used the non-gifted in their experiments. They went against the teaching of the Stíg guðanna and used the souls of humans to attain power that they could not handle. Many men and women went mad. Many children were killed for their hearts. Many cities were destroyed. In the end, we turned on each other due to a mad lust for power and the king won the battle with his machines.
Mages were executed in masses. The king convinced the nation that all mages, save for the ones in noble families were dangerous and evil. He burned all books that contained old magick. He brought in an age were magick was weak.
Then came the reaper.
The advocate of death himself.
