No Big Deal

I sit in English, tapping my pencil and smacking my gum. 45 more seconds until school is out for winter break. "So class, during winter break, I want you all to make a paper on someone who means a lot to you. Not just because they're your significant other and you 'love' each other. But, because they inspire you and make you a better person. Now, what does inspire mean? Huh?" The bell rings. Thank god.

I grab my purse and get out of the school as fast as possible. I sit on the bench outside for a second while everyone files out of the classes. Scott sees me and runs over. "Lydia!" I smiled a little.

"What are you doing tonight? I'm having a little get together at my place."

"Little? Who's invited?"

"You, stiles, Kira, Isaac, Derek-"

I laughed. "You're inviting Derek?!"

He shrugged. "Yeah." I rolled my eyes. "Anyways...do you want to come or not?"

"I'll be there at 9. But I don't have a ride. My car's in the dealership. I'm walking home today."

"Maybe stiles can take you. I got to go. See ya later!"

I look at the doors and see Stiles sulking down the stairs. I wave to him and he sees me. He smiles and walks over. "Hey, Lyds."

"Hi. I was wondering if you could take me to Scott's get together tonight."

"Scott's having a get together tonight?" I nod. "Was I invited?"

"He said you were. That's why I'm going." I smile at him and he blushes.

"Okay. When are you going?" I hold up 9 fingers. "Okay. I'll pick you up at 8:30. I have to go home. Bye." He starts to walk away.

"Wait! Don't you walk?"

He nods. "I'm not taking my car into this parking lot after the spray paint incident." I smile a little at the memory of Isaac throwing paint grenades at his "baby".

"Good times. Maybe we can walk home together?" He nods and I catch up to him. "Soooooo....."

"Thanks for Saturday. That was really sweet of you." I shrug.

"No biggy." I assure him.

"You want to know more about Malia, don't you?" I look at him. "Like about the scar and stuff."

I look away quickly. Of course I did. "I know the gist of it."

"It's not a crime to ask." He pushes the sidewalk stoplight button.

"I just didn't think you would want to talk about it."

He shrugs. "It seems like we are pretty close now, I can probably tell you without you feeling too sorry for me. It really wasn't that big of a deal."

It was totally a big deal. "I'll tell you then. Alright?" I nod and look at him as we cross the street and make it to the other side.

"Well, it was after a big test. Malia got an F and I got an A. No big deal. She asks me, 'why does everything come so easy to you?' We had just gotten home and my dad was at work. I simply told her 'well, I try really hard.' Her eyes totally lit up, as if she wanted to kill my family or something. Well, what's left of it. I asked her what was wrong and she told me 'you.' I asked what she meant and she just growled. I didn't mean it like that. I told her 'malia, nailing a test is harder then just showing your teeth and scaring people away.' Bad idea. She says 'really? Maybe you should try that sometime. But you're just a puny human. So why even try.' I respond 'malia, relax. You don't have to be like your dad.' And then of course she pulls the mom card. 'Then you shouldn't act like your dead freaking mom!' Of course I'm shocked. I didn't get what she meant. I'm not that boring, am I? I really loved malia. You know? I defend myself 'malia, you didn't have to say that.' And then malia says 'I can say whatever I want, okay?!' 'Malia, relax.' And then she goes crazy. 'Stop!' She screams and grabs the glass of water she was drinking. She throws it across the room and of course, a shred hits my neck. I try to stay calm, but pretty soon everything is black. And malia is gone. I never see her again."

I guess I didn't know the gist of it. He didn't have many tears building up. But there was one rolling down his cheek. I could tell he hated crying. Especially in front of people. Especially in front of me. "Stiles. I'm so damn sorry." I wipe away the tear. He shrugs a little and smiles a bit.

"Remember. It's no big deal." His hand twitches and I try to smile at him. We arrive at my house then. "No big deal."
