You are a soldier in the U.S Military when everything went to Hell. Demons and monsters from the Neatherrealm had swarmed cities on Earth, and you are in the fight.
It isn't easy, especially since you don't have any powers like Johnny Cage. But your Commander Sonya always said you didn't need powers.

"You'll make a fine soldier, rookie," she had said to you on the first day of Boot Camp. You decided to make that dream become reality.
Well.
That's definitely easier said than done. To start off, your helicopter crashed with you and your comrades, a minority of them died on impact, and one of your ankles is broken.

Yeah, truly a fine soldier....
Trying not to cut yourself on glass and rocks, you drag your body out of the wreckage and look around.
It's chaos everywhere. Buildings are crumbling, fires scattered around....men dying. Through the smoke, you see Johnny fighting a Revenant version of Scorpion.

Wait. If Scorpion is here, where is Sub-Zero? The last time you saw him, he was a cyborg, and that was 20 years ago. A demon charges at you from the smoke. You grunt, holding out your pistol and aiming for it's head.

The demon suddenly gets frozen over and shatters from behind. There's Sub-Zero, also a Revenant.
His skin is grey with yellow veins, and eyes glowing with anger. He sees you laying there, and his eyes narrow, head tilted.

Despite that there is a very high chance he'll rip your spine out and use it as a toothpick, you smile at him warily.
"Hey there, Frosty." You smirk.
He blinks, snapping out of whatever rage he was put under.
"(Y/n)?" Hell, even his voice sounds evil.
"What are you doing here? Leave at once!"

"Yeah, no can do, snowflake. I'm kinda hurt here." You notion to your twisted ankle.
He exhales, his mask letting out a rush of cold air.
Without even asking for your permission, he grabs you, carrying you bridal style and he runs away from the fighting.

"The Hell are you doing?!" You demand.
"I run, you shoot!" Using his free hand, he creates a path of ice to slide on. Scoffing, you shoot at the demons to clear his path.
SOMEHOW, you both make it out of the city and into the safety of the forest.

Sub-Zero sighs, setting you down gently so you lean against a tree. Now that you can really look at him, you take note of the jagged scar over his right eye. That wasn't there the last time you saw him.

He takes his mask off, revealing that he has a beard.
"Jesus, Sub, you've gotten old." You joke.
He scoffs, looking offended, but you see a small smile on his grey lips.
"You are not looking too great, either."
Glad to see your friendship with him hasn't died out, even after all of these years.

"How is your ankle?"
"Sore. I've been through worse, Liang. Nothing a splint and resting can't fix."
He kneels down to meet your gaze, looking worried.
"What happened to you?"
"I was about to ask the same question. What's with the emo aesthetic?"
He frowns, not getting your joke.

"I have been put under a spell by Quan Chi. Same with Hanzo."
"Hanzo....Oh, you mean Scorpion. Yeah, you two don't look so good."
He looks down at his hands. "I just want to be free of this...."
"Let me help you." You say firmly. "I'm no sorcerer, but I can try to bring you out of that spell."

He smiles genuinely at you, looking at you sadly. "If only it were that easy." He murmurs, leaning forward and kissing you on the lips.
You tense up, shocked that your life long friend is showing you affection.

Kuai Liang is a serious man, not one to outwardly show any affection other than jokes and smiles, but even those are rare. So for him to kiss you, on the lips....your heart just about stops.
He breaks it, since you're too stunned to.
"We should leave. I'll protect you."

He carries you again, then flashes away in a whirlwind of ice and snow.

The Lin Kuei temple is basically abandoned, since most of Kuai's people have been cyberized and taken captive. Even with all the layers of your army outfit, you still shiver.

He enters quickly, then slams the doors behind him with a bang. You can't see much from the shadows, but he knows where he's going. To your relief, you spot a medical wing filled with rows of empty beds. He lays you down in one and takes of your boots.

You suck in a sharp breath at how twisted your ankle is. He places a cold hand on it, numbing away the pain. You suddenly realize how tired you are, and nod off.

The warmth of someone's arms around you stirs your from your sleep.
"Try not to move too much." You nearly elbow Kuai in the stomach, until you realize he's holding you in his arms.

Your ankle and lower leg feel stiff. Glancing down, you see he had put it in a full on cast from your knee down.
"Your ankle had been shattered from the helicopter crash. Just remain still. We're safe here." He states this in his usual matter-of-fact tone that would often annoy you, but not now.

"Thank you, Kuai." You say. He chuckles, the sound low like a growl. You're facing towards him, his chilled breath coming out in small clouds of smoke.
"Anytime." His voice is still gruff, eyes glowing yellow and skin still grey with the veins.

"I know I should have said this a lot sooner, before I was turned....but, I love you. I always have. I didn't admit it before, since it was against the Lin Kuei. But since they have all been lost...." he sighs.
"You just don't want to be alone anymore, do you?" You ask quietly. He nods.

"Well," you smile. "I'm not exactly going anywhere. I'm sure Johnny and Sonya have things handled."
"What about your rank? You're a soldier."
"They probably think I died. That doesn't matter. Just kiss me again, you polar bear...."
He laughs, doing so again.
Yeah, it'll take time for your ankle to heal, but right now? You've got all the time in the world.
