That dinner went the same way all the others went. I learned a strategy to get through these times--no matter how nauseous it makes you feel, always have your mouth full. Since it's rude to talk in such circumstances, you have an excuse for not answering questions.
My foster parents, Mary and Hank, are in charge of me for now. I've been told my whole life not to get attached, not like that was a problem in the first place. I've never lived somewhere that left me blue when they gave me up. My whole life I've been used to this constant anxiety of where a fist will punch me next. To the foster care system my body was just a punching bag, all people were interested in was exploiting my vulnerabilities.
Mary and Hank were trying to let me know they were different. Word got out about my past, it doesn't come to my surprise that they treat me differently than any other adolescent.
I start at a new school tommrow. I didn't have high hopes for that either, there would be nothing special about it. The names will change, but nothing else. Around every corner there will be stuck up females showing too much cleavage and poking for a victim of their viscous, vicious words.
Like all teenage girls, I'm yearning for a quality present in me that could be considered unique in a positive light. What perhaps is unusual about me is my distaste for speaking. A day would be significant if I spoke more than one word. Corrine Smith had my tounge. She gave me so many bruises on my mouth my lips were constantly purple.
I waved goodbye to Mary as soon as the high school was in sight. I then left the car, lacking any words. I stared at the ceiling while the Principal talked endlessly about how good the school is.
"And I thought Angus would be the perfect student to show you around..." he said with excitement as I turned around to see a boy with curly blonde hair standing in the doorway.
